Hi. Last wkend my AT gears refused to shift from 1st gear n I sent to the WS for repairs. They changed the sensor n reprogrammed it but informed me that the condition of my gearbox is not gd. They recommended me to overhaul it at $3,600 (warranty 10,000km) or they can replace with a reconditioned one (japam import n warranty 2 wks) at $1,400. Currently my gears change is still ok n relatively smooth but seemed noiser than before (not sure if is imagination) and sluggish when going beyond 80km/hr.

Like to seek advice on whether I shld get an overhaul or reconditioned one since the difference ard $2,200. The WS say will provide me with another car for free while my car is in e WS (2 - 4 days). I driving a Mazda 3SP n COE expiring ard 2 yrs 5 mths. TIA!

hmm based on the calculation, i will go for the reconditioned one.

1 rebuild/overhaul can buy 2 reconditioned gearbox...

don't believe WS, my friend's XC90 got same problem like your, sent to Volvo AD, they diagnosed to change GB, quoted 22k included labour, my friend don't believe and tried luck to outside friend's WS, changed GB oil and sensor cost $1000 only, now everything is ok

Agent always REPLACE ... Not Repair ... Common practice for them ...

Anyone has done gearbox overhaul or repair before ? (fil car) due to sound coming out from car, workshop says it is gearbox spoilt, and recommend car to be sent to gearbox overhaul specialist. any workshop to recommend ? what is the estimate price ? Thanks !!

There is one very popular WS in Pandan Loop doing Auto GB repair ... Can try to google them ...

Gearbox overhaul

i would say seek a few workshop and ask them whats the problem BUT DO NOT TELL THEM YOU FEEL THAT THIS IS GEARBOX PROBLEM!

let them do their checks if all says the same then do your own judgement which workshop is good to go ahead for repairs.

As car prices stay up north no doubt people will hang on to their existing car and try to last 10 years that's why maintenance is very important. Before repairing ask yourself the following:

1) How long more to drive?

2) Is it more worth it to sell/scrap or repair?

3) Other than gearbox what else needs attention?

4) Want to save money on maintenance i would recommend taking public transport, every know driving in Singapore is a liability activity (Accept the privilege of owning your own transportation)

Thinking of doing my ATF change at Autobac. Anyone did theirs there is the svc ok and do we need to make advance booking?

better don't go Autobac, it's on black shop list, you will be [knife]

actually any WS can do ATF change, you can go to you general service WS.

First, change the ATF. If problem persists, do a transmission pressure test although it can be inconclusive when issue is still minor but it will surface as the problem deteriorates. From my limited experience.

Hi Everyone,

Let me share my gearbox overhaul experience with you.

My nine yr old Airwave CVT gearbox finally died 2 mths ago after giving intermittent problems for over a year.  Its been a work horse and the family loves it although sadly we thought it may have to be retired.  Its a real dilemma but as COE hasn't dropped sufficiently, ultimately I made the decision to repair the gearbox.

Did searches on the web and identified a couple of places - can't remember the others but decided on KATC after giving a call and was lucky enough to reach KATC boss Raymond Khang whose handphone was given on one of the sites.  That swung it as most owners don't answer the enquiry line.  I liked the caring and knowledgeable response but at that point wasn't sure I could move the car.  So Raymond arranged for a tow truck to call me too.  Anyway, after praying, I was able to engage the gear and drive slowly the half hour journey to his workshop.  When the workshop tried to reposition the car it would not move again, so the gearbox had completely died.

Anyway to cut a long story short, Raymond gave me a good price and did the complete overhaul of my gearbox in record time of just over 2 days because I needed it for work (he estimated it would take a week but very kindly put a priority on my car).  I was surprised that the car could even move when I went to collect it but it was an excellent job.  The gear changes were silky smooth and was better than it had been for a very long time.  But soon I felt some vibrations and fuel consumption wasn't as good as before and I went back.  They patiently checked it and found that the engine mounting had disintegrated from old age.  Again they did this repair in record time and treated me like royalty to boot, giving me lifts to the bus stop etc. to make the multiple visits and leaving the car at KATC less painful.  Again, I was given priority and the repair was done very quickly.

I waited 2  months and a trip to KL later to write this testimony.  I have to say KATC is a great place to do up your gearbox.  The workshop is big, well organised and with tonnes of spareparts.  Probably the reason why they could do overhaul in a matter of days.  The mechanics are well trained and knowledgeable because the result speaks for itself.  One gearbox workshop even told me that there was no way to rebuild an airwave gearbox and told me that I had to buy a new one at great cost.  Well, KATC has the knowledge and capacity to not only rebuild it but to do it in record time - forget about JB, we have the best here.  The car feels fast and is faster than before.  I drove 3 guys when I was in Malaysia and one of them asked if it was a 2.4L car as they don't have the Airwave there. As you know, its only a 1.5L.  Never knew that a well tuned gearbox could liberate so much performance from the engine.  Its also more fuel efficient than before.  On top of that Raymond has an excellent, professional and polite crew there.  His brother Eddy is just as nice and professional and so is Randy another staff.  They were patient and investigated each problem I described and heard.  I guess with the gearbox in tip top condition, I started to hear other problems that the aging car had - they tightened my exhaust pipe for free and I have since also changed the aircon fan.  I guess I have to renew the COE now that its in such good shape.  Raymond also extended my warranty all the way to the end of my COE but I'm confident that the gearbox will last much longer than 9 mths!

KATC - thanks for giving my old faithful back to me, better than ever before when it almost ended up in the scrap!

Glad they are still around in Pandan loop WS. The only time I did a gearbox overhaul was in year 2000, I sent my old 11 yrs old BMW E34 for gearbox overhaul then as COE just renewed at that time. The mechanic owner seem to be trained overseas specialising in transmission repair.

Fast forward over the years then till now, no need to do anymore such GB overhaul on my past cars - Jap/Kor/Merc/Bmw. Any Gearbox fault, I just scrap and buy another pre-own or new car.

Unbelievable that after overhauling gearbox that could liberate more performance and faster than before? And more fuel efficient?

The most important point left out for being treated like a royalty and given priority, is the price for the work done.

My Sunny after 9 years and 260k mileage first time experienced gearbox problem. Car wouldn't more after starting. Gotta wait for few minutes and as months passed the wait got longer like 10 minutes. Unbearable.  Finally decided to go JB for cheaper alternatives.  Several WS quoted between RM1.8k to RM2.1k for second hand gearbox. Finally decided on the quote of RM2.1k as I felt comfortable with the WS.  The change was completed in a day. Now mileage coming 290k and I just renewed my COE in Jun.

As a neutral newbie, all your first 4 posting is a cut & paste about the wonderful service from KATC.

Praising to the high heavens. Biased review, no?

because most of the cars in Singapore are front wheel drive and auto.
