CNA latest : Senior staff nurse at IMH convicted for cheating a patient

A senior staff nurse at the Institute of Mental Health (IMH) was convicted on Monday morning in a district court for cheating a patient of S$2,000.

On 8 January 2009, Mong Kok Peng was helping a patient change into his attire when the patient showed him two S$1,000 notes.

The patient told Mong that he had kept the money with him instead of registering it with IMH staff as he was afraid the money would be lost.

Mong then told the patient he would keep the S$2,000 for safekeeping with IMH.

Throughout the day, the patient asked Mong four times about the money.

Mong told him the money had been registered and will be returned once he was discharged.

The next day, Mong, 34, went to the Singapore Turf Club to spend the $2,000 on horse racing.

While he was gambling, his colleagues called him saying the patient was about to be discharged and wanted to see him about the money.

He denied being shown the money but his offence was later discovered.

He will appear in court again on June 14. - CNA/vm

Now who is laughing at who ....... [laugh][laugh]

A fellow was driving past the grounds of Greystone Hospital one evening alone. He got a flat tire. In changing his tire he put the lug nuts in a hubcap to keep them together. Just as he was getting the spare from the trunk a car came along and caught the edge of the hub cap sending it and the lugnuts flying in the nearby field. The guy looks all over for the lugnuts but can only find the hubcap. He gets more and more frantic as the sun begins to get lower in the sky.

Watching this scene was a hosptial patient on the otherside of the fence surrounding the hospital grounds. Getting the fellow's attention and hearing him tell his tale of woe, the patient says, "why don't you just take one lugnut from each of the other three wheels and put the spare on with them? There is a gas station out on Route 10, you can drive there and they can set you up with the lugnuts you need."

Astonded at the ingenuity of this solution the fellow says "Hey that is brillant ! What's fellow like you doing in a place like Greystone?"

"I may be crazy but am not stupid!" Replied the patient.

That staff nurse is really stupid to ask that guy to hand over the money on th epretext of registering.

IMH patients are NOT STUPID...they are just mad & crazy ideas and actions! Does not mean that they have poor memories or cannot think!

If intention to cheat that money....just bring that man to bath....and then go to his bed to just STEAL the money!

Yup, looking at some of the assumptions here it's no wonder that locally we have a long way to go to shed off the stigma of mental illness. That includes the staff nurse's assumptions :D

In high-stress societies like ours, more common mental illnesses like depression, anxiety, etc. are affecting a larger number of people. Need IMH to cure. These people, though depressed or anxious, are not mentally incapable. Perfectly normal, except that they need to learn to manage their mental state, that's all. Can't easily cheat them of $2000, that's for sure!

People in the IMH can be smart people......
