Elviskoh Neutral Newbie June 21, 2010 Share June 21, 2010 Recently saw many new bmw 7 series breakdown and require towing service. It is unlikely that it will breakdown but wonder why it always happens?? due to burst tire, failed engine, dead battery, failure in mechanism/electronic of the car or any other reason? Anyone can share the point? ↡ Advertisement

Weiming 1st Gear June 21, 2010 Share June 21, 2010 Probably one of the numerous sensors in the car must have been faulty and the ECU just stopped the car by default. That is one of my pet peeves of modern cars. Too many nanny aid electronics and sensors that can cause unexpected breakdowns. This breeds a new class of drivers that are being controlled by the car and not the other way round.
Pckwpckw Neutral Newbie June 22, 2010 Share June 22, 2010 its nothing new to Bmw they only build on brand but not quality and reliability. BMW is among the lowest rating in UK and US car rating. Even their mini cooper is worst. My friend who own a 7 series make in 2003 in and out workshop countless time. A lot of 7 series owner go back to LEXUS LS or Mercede S class. Even i heard 5 series owner need to change their engine even at very low mileage.
Yeobh 4th Gear June 22, 2010 Share June 22, 2010 Most of these break-down cars owners are D type customers who just do not bother about regular services and try to save cut $$ spending. They should be driving pre 1980 cars
Ferraricalifornia 1st Gear June 22, 2010 Share June 22, 2010 the 2002-2004 model of the 7-Series was the first BMW to start off with the i-DRIVE computer systems....hence lots of technical problems.... even the Mercedes S-Class also have some electrical problems in the 2006 model when it was first launched.... all these electrical problems are always prone to have problems one.... they're still solving problems for air-planes which just use the 'Fly-by-wire' technology.... Watwheels Supersonic June 22, 2010 Share June 22, 2010 Too many electronic glitches. If car is still drivable with glitches, nebermind, but the glitches cause the car to be immobile. Bummer should be the new nick instead of Bimmer. No wonder in the first Transporter movie they used the older 7 series instead of a newer version. That was the last gen of the ultimate driving machine. 2nd and 3rd installment of Transporter they use Audi cars.
Mini-itx Clutched June 22, 2010 Share June 22, 2010 Electrical problems are very common on the new BMWs, esp those using the stupid i drive system. I guess they mistaken a car as an aircraft thinking that everyone will send the car in for full service inspection after every 5000KM.... Aircraft electronics work fine because its serviced and replaced regularly but how many does the same for cars? Excessive use of electronics without the proper maintenance required and this is what happens......
Ferraricalifornia 1st Gear June 22, 2010 Share June 22, 2010 no choice lah.... electronics allow for more 'toys' in cars, as well as make driving all the more safer.... welcome to the ''Komputer Technological" age....

What 'change their engine even at very low mileage'? What cars for that matter require a change of engine. This is not your Xbox car racing games where u can change anything. For your guide BMW is one of the companies that probably make some of the best and most reliable engines. Google the engine awards. Anything can fall apart in a BMW, the last thing to fall apart is their engine. And who said BMW has the lowest rating in the USA. Have you lived there? Ahbengdriver 6th Gear June 22, 2010 Share June 22, 2010 http://www.goodcarbadcar.net/2010/03/luxur...ruary-2010.html TOP 10 BEST-SELLING LUXURY AUTO BRANDS IN AMERICA (FEBRUARY 2010) Yes, Lexus sales were better last month than they were in February of 2009. The problem? Lexus sales in February of 2009 were way down from the 21,277 of February '08. In other words, Lexus' improvement in 2010 is an improvement on terrible totals. You could almost say that Lexus sales fell simply because the recovering economy should result in vastly improved Sales Stats. Because Lexus sales didn't grow appropriately (thank Toyota recall turmoil for that), BMW and Mercedes-Benz have been able to use their growth in sales to overcome Lexus' stronghold on the top of the luxury car sales podium. BMW, more specifically, deserves praise. It is the German Ultimate Driving Machine builder which watched as sales of the BMW X3, BMW X5, and BMW X6 shoot through the roof; 72.7% higher than in the same period of last year. The one automaker not seen in the Top 10 below? That'd be Porsche. Sales at Porsche were basically level at 1,531. Porsche Boxster/Cayman sales tumbled. Porsche 911 sales took a fall. Obviously, the Porsche Panamera total (409) has no prior year with which to compare. Porsche Cayenne sales went from 444 to 599.
