In the navy there are quite a few wordings/jargons very alien to civilians and even to folks from the army/air force. For example on board ships, left is port while right is starboard, toilet is called head, front is bow & back is stern. Anyone wants to share their experience in the navy? Even non-Singaporeans are welcome. As the old Yankee saying goes: Loose Lips Sinks Ships so please no confidential or even classified stuff like nav/weapon/radar/comm systems, operational details or other can-tell-you-but-have-to-kill-you information please. ↡ Advertisement Link to post Share on other sites More sharing options...

(one idiot I know kena sabo, he angry with something, then the mates turn on the PA system. Just then he shouted out loud "F the navy"!!! It was heard loud and clear by the CO, he kena 7 weekend confinement + extra duties.) Flag raising in the morning = Colours, observed by every navy in the world. State flag raised on the bow, ensign raised on the stern. Vessel making way, no colours but will fly the ensign at her mast. Breakfast = Breakfast Lunch = Dinner Dinner = Supper Supper = Nite snack Ship crew = Hands U will heard the usual PA announcement : Hands to Dinner, that means lunch is ready for you to consume and its lunch time!!! For e.g OOW(Officer of the Watch) : Turn Starboard 10 Helmsmen : Turn Starboard 10 Helmsmen turn the wheel to 10 degrees rudder angle to starboard and report back : Helmsmen : Starboard 10, sir. These are pretty much british terms used in the olden days. The merchant/commercial ship that my company have, we still use these terms. 1st mate is the Chief Officer, 2nd-in-command after the Captain/Master. The list goes on, 2nd mate, 3rd mate, etc.... In commercial shipping, Chief Engineer and Captain are on equal standings. But in the Navy, CO is the king. Chief Engineer is just a old experienced WO. But nowadays, younger WO coming up already. He enforces discipline and keep the enlisted/specialist ranks in check. However like I mentioned before, navy folks on ships live in close proximity so really coxswains I have met were all quite nice as compared to the land black-faced counterparts. Until recently our senior officers were still called generals but later changed to the more common rear-admiral or vice admiral ranks. However the other RSN ranks still follow those of the army/air force & caused confusions amongst other navies when there is some interaction. For example, our captain rank in the US Navy is a colonel rank. Our 2LT is called an ensign in their navy. The ranking-equivalent is as follows: RSN US Navy (E.g.) Admiral (various) Admiral (Various) Colonel Captain Lt Colonel Commander Major Lt Commander Captain Lieutenant (Sr Grade) Lieutenant Lieutenant (Jr Grade) 2LT Ensign Link to post Share on other sites More sharing options...

You can bring your camera if if you want to. That's all." The above was piped during my 1st MSTD. And guess what? Excited MIDs were up on the deck promptly with their cameras. I kid you not. Me & my buddy SSG Bosco (anyone know him? a GREAT guy who smoked unfiltered Camel before 2.4km & still get monetary award!!) were almost rolling on the deck laughing near 40mm gun.
