Gay rights activists ask six political parties to state their stand

02:35 PM Mar 02, 2011

SINGAPORE - A group of gay rights activists have sent a joint letter to six political parties here, asking them to clarify their respective positions on several issues of interest to the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgendered (LGBT) community.

The letter, sent in mid-September, was signed by seven activists including academic Russell Heng and prominent blogger Alex Au.

According to the signatories, "our intention is to release the various parties' responses to the LGBT community at an appropriate time, with minimal commentary on our part".

In an online posting recently, the seven activists noted that none of the six political parties responded to their complete list of questions.

However, three parties - National Solidarity Party (NSP), The Reform Party (RP) and Singapore Democratic Party (SDP) - "provided a reasonably clear outline of their stand with respect to LGBT concerns", the activists said.

"The People's Action Party did not reply at all, nor even acknowledge the letter. The Singapore Democratic Alliance acknowledged the letter but in the end did not provide a reply," they added.

The Workers' Party replied by saying that it continues not to have any position on gay-related issues.

According to the activists, the NSP, in its reply, said that overall, the party's position is that "Singapore's social core values, at this moment, only recognises family unit with heterosexual relationship. In principle, NSP has to respect such core values held as a society."

However, the party said it will give its Members of Parliament the freedom to vote on Section 377A of the Penal Code, which criminalises homosexual sex between consenting men, according to their conscience.

For its part, RP said that one of the party's "central tenets is that there should not be any discrimination between individuals based on gender, race, religion, age and sexual orientation". The party is also "committed to working towards the repeal of Section 377A and the decriminalisation of homosexuality".

According to the signatories, the SDP referred them to position statements that the party had previously made on its website.

One, for example, called on the Government to repeal Section 377A, saying that the law "discriminates against a segment of our population and that discrimination, in whatever form, has no place in society".

Don't think any potential MP will want to take a very clear stand on LGBT issues. They'll at best be neutral with inclination to the core values of the society. How many percent of the population is Gay or supports the LGBT? It'll be foolish to try to win the votes of the minority & offend the rest. Especially for the opposition...

Homosexuals will still be deemed as an invisible portion of the society... It'll take years for them to be accepted...

Think they are just trying to push for their rights and will continue to push and look after their own interests if elected. So, this kind of people who stand for political election/office has no respects from me. And they should not get elected in the first place.

As a politician, they should be looking after the interests of the majority I guess.
