SINGAPORE: Member of Parliament (MP) for Mountbatten Lim Biow Chuan has conducted his own spot checks to verify complaints of irregular bus services in Mountbatten.

According to Mr Lim's Facebook page, the checks were conducted on Monday and Thursday at two separate bus stops during the morning peak hour, between 8am and 9am.

Mr Lim was accompanied by an officer from the Land Transport Authority during both checks.

The first check was made at Jalan Batu, near the HDB estate at Tanjong Rhu while the second was at the bus stop at Block 56, Cassia Crescent.

Mr Lim told Channel NewsAsia he was "horrified" that three bus services -- 158, 12 and 197 -- took half an hour to arrive, and said he has written to the Public Transport Council.

He said by doing so, he hopes to influence the public transport operators to improve their service, and to stress the need for regular services.

"I know how bus companies work," Mr Lim said.

"They say there are traffic jams, breakdowns etc. I do empathise. But at the end of the day, bus commuters are frustrated and bus companies must know this."

Mr Lim said residents had complained to him during the campaign period.

Although he has made similar checks before, he said he decided to publicise his latest efforts on Facebook to be more visible to residents.

Mr Lim said: "I realise that when you do it quietly, people don't realise you've been doing it, and come elections, they say you've not been doing anything".

Mr Lim said he would follow up with SBS Transit and monitor the services for improvements.

Horrified?

Hope many of his MIW colleagues will go around "horrifying" themselves all over the island to see for themselves what daily commuting in public transportation system is like.

Leading them should be the mushroom minister.

public transport users have been raising this for years but nobody hue lan, and PTC happily allow bus and MRT fares to go up every year when service standards are declining.

now cos GE only 60% all of a sudden wake up already.

am waiting for new Transport Minister to trying taking MRT during the am and pm peak hours, he'll be horrified :o also ... double confirm.

They just know the arrival time only. More to be horrified. The bus services that go round and round the neighbourhood at horrified pace and take horrified time to reach final destination >1 hour later for a journey less than 10km apart.

This is just the beginning niah. [:p]

More neighbourhoods' bus services to horrify them [laugh]

When I mentioned this piece of news, my in-law pointed out that just downstairs near my block there're also three bus services that take half-hour to arrive!

Maybe they all should come up with a roster to take turns to spot-check bus services in various areas.

yeah, PTC is a joke. think they forgot its PUBLIC transport council and they are to look into the public's transport needs, and not SMRT's profits. every year they allow fares to go up cos SMRT comes up with the usual lame excuse of operating costs.

I dun expect MRT / bus fares to come down, but I would expect service standards to improve significantly.

Many have been begging the policy makers to do something but sadly all fallen on deaf ears until GE 2011.

Now they are suddenly "horrified".

Shows how the combined effort of 39.1% of our voters & many oppo parties can do to make them "horrified".

There are still many "horrifying" experiences to be put right.

We will come Monday onwards how these new office bearers perform henceforth.

Their perform appraisal will be on that crucial day come 2016 or earlier...

At least this MP is describing a situation which we are familiar with.

Previously, the ex-minister went to check the bus condition at Bukit Panjang and miraculously managed to take a photo of himself in a relatively empty bus (which was a far difference from the actual situation) and tried to shove down our throat that the bus condition was "not so bad".

And now he can take bus or train as a commoner come Monday to see if what he experienced previously was "not so bad"

The key word is spot check. If it is just a informed check than the result will not be true reflection of what is going on. Hopefully more of surprise check to be done in future and not informing management people he/she ( minister or MP ) will be coming at this timing this date. Than that would make a big difference in the findings found.

Hope the new MP and minister to understand this logic and do away with informing the relevant authorities that he or she will be coming at this date and time. It will not be true reflection of what is happening to ground at all. Surprise check would be the way to go to find out the true reflection of what is happening on the ground issue.

this same joke is now reviewing the minister salaries...

I think the joke is on us...

If they really mean business, should at least invite one of the oppo MPs or NCMPs to sit to sit in the committee.

Whatever they do must not only be fair BUT ALSO SEEN TO FAIR.

BTW bro mentioned on some other thread that someone wish to check with you in the General Discussions forum on In-Car Video thread of getting your product. Not sure you have visited that thread lately.
