Solving the MRT crunch during peak hours

why can't SMRT or garment open up to the public for ideas? then they shortlist the feasible ones and study closer.

scholars are not God. They will not have solution to every problem. The brains of 5 million population is better than a group of scholars.

The garment is still not opening up to the people of SG

Exactly, they are not even taking them...

How they know it would be ideal in the first place

They wanted to do that for LRT and still studying on the feasibility. read it somewhere on the news

LRT can easilly add one more cabin.. as during construction, SMRT and SBS transit already cater for that (that's why the platform at LRT station is longer than the LRT itself as it is to cater for the expension ) . But MRT quite hard as the platform has already been fixed. So cannot further increase cabin if not everything like how the train move, safety distance acceleration, breaking all will be affected, plus there is no exit for the extention of MRT cabin, the train door open and close is synchronize together and not one by one close so add another cabin at the end would be difficult. And do not forget, the train is 2 directional. What I mean 2 directional is, the front and back can be driven by the MRT stuff.. So now you see the pic ? Imagine the behind cabin is fix at no door to open and the train travel East-West direction everything ok. Than when the train reach terminal and swap to West-East direction than the cabin that cannot open door would be the front cabin where the SMRT driver is driving. (Like that how)

P.S I maybe wrong though correct me if I am wrong.. that is base on my understanding and may not be truly correct.

Where TS is coming from is to increase capacity while saving costs as well. Of coz it might not be 100% feasible but then the scholars there will be to improve/ tweak to make it work and that's what they are being paid for right?

Then whats holding LRT from having 2 carriages since the stations are already built for it? LRT are quite packed too

scholars are highly paid, live in private estates and dont take public transport. hence they have no idea what is the real problem

Neutral Newbie

knowing singaporeans' "pattern', the 2 extra carriage will hardly be occupied, just like on the bus, few people want to move the the rear of the bus, most probably it will become the study area of some students or the smooching corner of some amorous couples

they can redesign the front and back carriage to be just 50% longer.

Save cost I suppose, they want to maximise the usage before buying more cabin. That's what I could think of.. Like they do not want the train cabin to be under usage and waste $ to buy the cabin at the 1st place.

SMRT and SBS transit LRT platform is cater for future expension.. and they would know one day the LRT will be very crowded and that's when they would start to consider adding cabin to the current LRT.

safety distance quite likely, i was involved in the mrt crash at clementi station when i am in polytechnic, i was in the mrt train behind while my dad was in the mrt train in front.

i remember the train i was in braking hard for quite some time but it still keep moving till it bang the train infront.

I remember the panic despite it being a not that serious crash, no deaths although quite a number of injuries, i myself was sent to hospital for facial injury.

Think this doesn't have anything to do with frequency of trains, being 3mins apart of 1 min apart doesn't really matter. What matters here is COMMUNICATION between station and arriving train. If the previous train is held up for any reason, the approaching trains should be given warnings all the way down the line so they can slow their approach sufficiently to stop in case of emergency.

The distance between stations is not so near that trains, given ample warning, are not able to stop in time. Right now, even during peak periods, frequency of trains can take their sweet time to arrive!! Was taking from B.Batok at about 7:00pm (not super peak but still quite alot of commuters at that time), just missed a train, looked up to the sign board which announced next train arriving in 5 mins!! I was like, wahlao, 5mins confirm packed like siao lah! And I wasn't wrong!

Someone somewhere mentioned that their targeted number of commuters per train in order for SMRT to rake in the profits is 6pax per sq meter! That's really sardine if you consider that some persons have large things to carry, or are large people themselves! WTF are we man?! Meat?! Numbers? Just a statistic? All of the above I suspect...

But like what MCF had mentioned before for the MRT train, during 1980s construction, who would know the population would hit 6.5 million one day and they design the train and platform base on (I do not know maybe to 5 million popluation) ? So end up the platform of MRT station is that long only to cater for the demand.. and who knows fast forward to year 2000s population increase so much since 1980s.. so much that now they would find it hard to extend the platform length ( Cost and also if do expension it will affect passanger taking train due to distruption of service ) . It is just like the installation of half height platform screen doors of how it would affect communters travelling and thus only can be install at midnight time, something like that.

So can't blame the current transport minister or SMRT now actually.. and I believe they are trying their best to solve these problem.

My suggestion is to convert seats to those that can flip up when not in use and lock them during peak hours except for the two-chair seats (for elderly, preg and sick). That would free up more space then adding on 2 carriages. During off peak hours, unlock them.

For Bukit Batok MRT train which is the North-South Bound train used to have limitation of only 1 platform at terminal at jurong east MRT station, and the problem is solve by adding another platform at jurong east MRT station already. So the 5 mins at peak hours should be solve soon as the new platform should be open soon ( can't quite remember date ) . So that would reduce the waiting timing of train for North-South Bound tracks.

Darn I was still thinking the Gov can mandate SMRT/SBS to run for 3yrs at breakeven cost to ease the crunch whilst rest of the infra upgrade is being completed. Since they are always posting profit results.

Use money to solve issue. As radical as providing 1 stop (Jurong - City Hall) bus service. [laugh]

Actually, if they could be much efficient...

I dont see a need for another platform...

But well, since they already built liao....Hope it would be much efficient than before
