Why some vintage vehicle numbers did not come with a check letter as suffix

e.g. SW1824, SR3426

but some got the suffix letter? e.g. SM8442L

Are you sure of your examples? Are they real numbers or your assumptions? What I know is that the suffix (checksum) was added only after Singapore became independant. Before that "Malaysian" registered numbers were not with checksum. Based on your three numbers, logically SM should not have suffix. Not sure liao!

Dude,

For the 1st 2 examples you cited (SW1824 and SR3426): -

No vehicle record can be found.

And as for SM8442L, it's a 1.8L 1966 Volvo?? Wow!

One of my favorite licence plate remains SS 55 S which I saw on a Ferrari many years ago ... from online records, ... the owner now drives a 5.4L V8 Mercedes Benz, CLK DTM AMG [thumbsup]

These three numbers i saw from Channel 8 on wed or thu introducing a vintage car collector.

In real life, I really saw some S_ 9999 numbers with a checksum suffix while some did not have.

I wonder why leh?
