The New 3 amongst us

The latest BMW 3 Series, the F30, has now landed with a longer, larger and lighter package. Behind those angry new lights lies 2 new turbo-charged engines. A 4-cylinder 2-litre (strangely named 328i) pushing out 245 horses with a peak torque figure of 258 lb-ft from 1,250 rpm (That'll be 350Nm), propelling it from 0-62 mph in 5.9 seconds. Pretty punchy for a 4 banger.

The range topping 335i receives BMW's much revered 3-litre straight six with a twin-scroll turbocharger strapped on. Giving 305 horses and 295 lb-ft (400Nm) of torque at 1,200 rpm. 0-62 mph in the 335i arrives in 5.5 seconds (335i).

Although i frown at giving a 4-banger 2-litre (turbocharged or not!) a 328i badge, i guess this is the direction cars are headed for. Emissions and enviromentalist be damned...

The exterior of F30 seems to be a facelift of the current E90 with a new set of headlights. Wonder how the coupe will look like.

Wow that's a lot of torque for a 2 liter engine 350nm at 1250rpm...That's more than an average unmodded WRX...

Guessing the 335i will still retain the N55 engine..

Nice ride. But if you guys can wait, go for the new 528i (it's actually a 2litre) with 240ponies and 350Nm of torque... Enough to do a century sprint at 6.6s. The A5 sportback do a stock 211 horse and 350Nm torque... Unless you do a stage 1 and bump the horse to 272, straight race the Quattro may lose out to this 528i.... Looking forward !

TS did not give the full picture. He only let out the good stuff which are the higher range of 3 series. Singapore may not get this. Singapore more likely to get the 320i which will be added to the gasoline lineup and it's powered by a 184hp, 270 Nm version of the 2.0 litre TwinPower Turbo. There is also a Hybrid version of the BMW 3 series can be expected in next year and it is powered by the same hybrid powertrain as the new ActiveHybrid 5.

Two litre TwinPower turbo giving out only 184hp ?

usual formula. Sleeker eyes to look fiercer.

What's new?

I'm more impressed by Mercedes design.

They don't always follow the usual formula of "fierce is better"

For example. The CL class.

Like every BMW model, I think singapore will get the full range of F30. If there are people buying, why not? I don't see any reason for them to hold back releasing any edition of F30 except for diesel.

Even the 320i with 184 hp, 270 Nm coupled with 8 speed gearbox is enough to rival the competition. In terms of performance, that is C200 CGI territory and the Merc performance is not as good as this BMW. A4 2.0T quattro will beat it flat in terms of performance but that should be another price level, likely to compete with the C250 and 328i.

To undercut competitors and to boost sales, BMW asia might likely offer a 318i for asian markets, which would be a non-turbocharged version? That is their marketing style. If they price it below the C180k and A4 1.8T, surely best seller again.

That is for poorer buyers who cannot afford the 2L turbo producing 240 hp (BMW 328i).

I am sure if they wanted to, they can squeeze out close to 300 hp from the turbo 2.0L but that would be eating into their 335 sales.

IL-4 turbo cannot compare to IL-6 in term of smoothness.
