Picnic06-Biante15 Supersonic October 24, 2011 Share October 24, 2011 I still prefer them listed under Cat 'B' ...... As Cat 'B' & Open Cat mostly for those expensive cars (like Merc, BMW, ...... etc..) of which, the owner can affort. Leave Cat 'A' to those middle working class ..... SimonTan 2nd Gear October 24, 2011 Share October 24, 2011 People are misguided to think that removing taxi from CAT.A,will allow the price to drop. Why was taxi the culprit this time? All along, taxi has being in Cat.A. Once reason I can think of is the belief that the costs of higher taxi COE will be passed down to the passenger. So there is catch-22 situation. People justify the worth of owning a car,as compared to taking the taxi to work and family activities. So now Coe too high, people give up cars. But the taxi fares keeps getting more expensive. Each jump in taxi fares, makes owning a car more justifiable. But more car buyers, means taxi have to push up the COE prices to secure enough quota to register their fleets. This loop might be the reason why people want taxi out of CAT.A.
Bobztoise 1st Gear October 24, 2011 Share October 24, 2011 if COE meant to ease road congestions, then having a separate Cat is not feasible.. after all, taxis do not have a dedicated lane and use the same roads as private cars; taking them out will worsen the congestion

Hermitage 1st Gear October 24, 2011 Share October 24, 2011 IN one pocket, OUT the other. That's what'll happen if taxis are given a separate COE category. Afterall, it's the number of vehicles registered that matters, not which category they are registered in...
Jonjees 1st Gear October 24, 2011 Share October 24, 2011 Are there any stats for taxi growth in the last 10 years? Having another Category for taxis will manage its growth, afterall we dont want our roads to be filled with taxis right?
Rncw 5th Gear October 24, 2011 Share October 24, 2011 coe or not, the car population still getting more and more...taxis also getting more and more...gahment getting more and more of the peoples' money...peasants' money getting lesser and lesser...with the cost of living getting higher and higher...but standards getting lower and lower

VprD Neutral Newbie October 24, 2011 Share October 24, 2011 Government cars are exempted from COE and all taxes. Wonder why Gov vehicle are exempted from Road tax. We pay road tax because LTA say we use their road. Gov also use the road and add to the vehicle population but exempted from COE and taxes. Maybe becuase they own the road ?!! Old-driver 5th Gear October 24, 2011 Share October 24, 2011 Its about the lesser of the evils... go to Cat A, all those driving B & B complain. Go to Cat B, the rich cant be bothered and bid higher. Higher cost pass down to consumers. Consumers complain of high taxi fares. Same goes if it is in other Cat... On the other hand, if have a separate Cat for Taxis, the quota will be have to be cut from the others so LPPL

A5SB 1st Gear October 24, 2011 Share October 24, 2011 A probable view is that taxi companies with their financial strength can afford to bid up the COE price to insure they get their COE. Although it is also just as likely that taxi companies being greedy as they are perceived to be, are unwilling to pay more than they should for their COE, as this eats into their cost. Taxi companies charge a fixed rental to the hirers, so there is no direct ways to recover the cost if they bidded outrageously for their COE. If LTA create a separate class of COE just for taxis, then where should it come from? Cat A, B or E, or equal apportion for each class? At any point of time there is a fixed number of COE available, so taking out from any or all of these classes will reduce the supply of COE, which may push up the price of COE as dealers may be desperate to fulfil their order. Much as I hate COE, as I paid nearly 60k for mine this year, it's a LLST situation thanks to 60.1%.
Fastfive1 5th Gear October 24, 2011 Share October 24, 2011 Why not restrict the number of people who can become taxi drivers? This city is filled with taxis but due to their desire to earn more, they'll only stop for you during the peak hour or they'll wait til peak hour before they come out to look for people who need a ride. The thing about taxis is that more and more of them are flooding our roads adding to the congestion. Another way to control car population is to restrict people from taking 100% loan to buy their car because most of the time people can't afford to make payments because they're living beyond their means. Of course if they can afford to make the monthly payments then that's alright but majority of people who take 100% loan can't and have their cars auctioned off.
