Do we all believe that Toyota / Lexus is so stupid to get BMW engines leaving their "reliable" engines behind? Japanese are very smart and they know what they want in life at least in business.

They may be not so stupid....my hypothesis:

1. High performance = Low volume.. so makes sense to collaborate with best in the business

2. Lexus turbos underperform...might as well save on R&D, divert cash to hydrogen/EV research

3. BMW can offer Toyota advanced hybrid tech, more cost effective to outsource instead of renewing 25 year old (admittedly reliable) Prius technology

4. Offer to BMW another battery source with their Panasonic partner

5. BMW reliability seems to be getting better, possibly best of the Germans at present according to some surveys.

6. Toyota continues on an established successful pattern, beginning with using BMW Diesel engines in Euro Toyotas, out sourcing 86 to Subaru, out sourcing Supra to BMW. It also plays the game the other way, with subsidiary Daihatsu the out source of the Mivy, its recent deal with a Mazda.....etc.

Having said all that, Mazda is the exciting jap car maker at present.

Comparison all cars in same family

BMW 2015 model failures, car under agent 5 yr warranty and service package

Variable ratio Steering rack (replaced under warranty)

Valve cover gasket (replaced under warranty)

Turbo oil return pipe (replaced under warranty)

Turbo charge pipe (replaced under warranty)

Rear tail lamp cluster (replaced under warranty)

Radiator

Lexus 2014 model failures car under agent service, Extended warranty, no service package.

Front left shock absorber (replaced under warranty)

Rear right shock absorber (replaced under warranty)

12 volt battery (first two replaced under warranty, replaced two since)

Hybrid battery (replacement recommended by agent under warranty at exactly 4 years 90k)

Foot brake cable causing rattle (adjusted under warranty)

Lexus 2006 launch model failures sold at 8.5 yrs 180k

Engine mounts replaced at 110k

Wiper blades worn out charged several times

Brake rotors replaced under warranty once.

Sticky dashboard and interior trim (was to be replaced under warranty but sold car)

Thatâs it!!

BMW 2008 model

Engine TOP overhaul at 28k (!) (replaced under warranty)

Gearbox mechatronic module (replaced under warranty twice)

Steering hydraulic pipe burst (replaced under warranty)

Shock absorbers leaking at 30k (all of them, went after market)

Aircon evaporator failure ($3k, failed just outside warranty period)

A few other things....

Conclusion

BMW seems to have gotten a lot better after E series.

Lexus seems to be struggling to maintain past quality

Not a toyota fan boy but I still can accept shocks as it’s a wear and tear item for all cars. Hybrid and 12v battery is way too excessive.

For bmw, radiator, steering rack and turbo pipes shouldn’t have to be replaced assuring warranty. You never see such components replaced in a Japanese car.

I would agree with you and normally that’s the case. However, there is a current model Japanese MPV causing headaches with turbo motor failures. My own jap cars had radiator and hydraulic pipe failures before. Family member replaced two cvt gearbox’s on a popular jap model.

I agree on the whole Japanese cars have less issues/cost less to upkeep. But if we are just talking about Lexus vs BMW, then it seems to me one is getting better and the other is struggling to maintain previous achievements.

Any pics of the original Lexus battery?

Want to see whether it indicates the OEM supplier.

When we changed in SG Borneo, we got the Bosch replacement.

By the way if you watch the video till the end I took the ES300h it shows there is no battery like the RX in the engine compartment guess its somewhere at the back with the hybrid battery pack.

Got to go sell my screws now  [:p]

My guess is that as Thailand has the full manufacturing eco-system for Toyota, they definitely have OEM supplies of 12V battery, some of which was branded as "Lexus" and sent to the spare parts supply chain. May still be made by the Thai factory of GS Yuasa or Panasonic etc, but can't see any specific branding or product number.

This is based on the fact that the battery has only Thai language stickers on top, rather than the usual mix of English and Japanese.

Saw a Lexus RC-F on the road yesterday. Stuck in traffic with me (otherwise I don't think I could've identified it).

Anyone here drive the GS-F?

Hi I need a little advice - Is S$160,000 for a roughly 3 year old pre-owned Lexus RX200T (Luxury) with 35,000 mileage a good deal or not?

A quick quick on SGCARMART indicates that 3 year old RX200t Lux is list price around 160+ to 170+, so sounds reasonable.

Ok but is the car worth buying? I have 1 kid and another on the way.   Between this and the new BMW X3, which I should go for assuming that I don't mind paying more for the X3?

Very subjective.

U gotta determine ur own criteria and the match the two cars to it.
