SINGAPORE - A search is being conducted for a lorry driver who has gone missing after his vehicle fell off a barge into the sea yesterday.

Jason Lim Wei Kwan, 37, was reportedly in the vehicle when the incident happened at Pasir Panjang Terminal at about 2.45pm.

According to reports, the lorry was being carried from Pulau Sebarok to Sungai Pandan by the barge, which was being towed by a tugboat.

Mr Lim was returning to the mainland after transporting chemicals from Tuas to Pulau Sebarok, a local news channel reported.

Further details on how the lorry fell of the barge is unknown at the moment. It is also not clear why the barge was plying the route.

The Maritime and Port Authority (MPA) is coordinating the search effort with the Police Coast Guard and the Naval Diving Unit from the Singapore Armed Forces.

Three MPA crafts and two Police Coast Guard crafts have been deployed for the search. MPA's hydrographic department, which tracks tides and tidal streams, has also been brought in.

Yesterday, MPA issued navigational broadcasts to vessels in the area to avoid the accident site and report sightings of the missing man.

The family of the missing man has contacted the media to ask for help in searching for him.

Lianhe Wanbao reported that the father of Mr Lim grew worried after he could not contact his son on the phone the whole of yesterday. He then learnt from the news that a man fitting his son's age and occupation was missing at sea.

The elder Mr Lim then called the media to enquire after the company and licence plate number of the missing man was in the news.

According to the Chinese daily, the father has been worried sick and unable to sleep as he suspects the missing man may be his son.

Local reports say Mr Lim is married to a Thai and has four children aged between three and 12 years. However, the wife is still in the dark as to her husband's disappearance, as she is reportedly on a trip to Thailand to visit her parents.

The elder Mr Lim said he does not have the wife's contact number in Thailand, and is at a loss as to how to contact her.

Missing lorry driver believed found

12:08 PM Dec 12, 2011SINGAPORE - According to a report by The Straits Times, a body spotted floating off Jurong Island this morning is believed to be that of lorry driver Jason Lim Wei Kwan.

The report added Jason's employer United Transware has confirmed a body has been found but its identity is still being established.

The man had gone missing after his lorry fell off a barge into the sea off Pasir Panjang Terminal on Saturday.

The lorry had been transporting chemicals from Tuas to Pulau Sebarok and was on the way back to the mainland when the incident happened.

The barge carrying the lorry was towed by a tugboat.

The missing lorry had been located yesterday, said the Maritime and Port Authority. AGENCIES

it appears that the 10 tonner was stationary onboard a roll on roll off barge when it fell into the sea. I don't know what is the usual SOP. Shouldn't occupants in such vehicles be ordered to leave the cabin and stay in a designated holding area within the barge when the barge is moving?

Think it went off from a barge.

Not only barge, there are cases of vehicles went into the sea during discharging from RoRo vessels (ramp with side barriers).

well. i doubt the barriers are as strong as crash barriers on the road.
