Cannot answer your question but I've driven to Merang jetty and parked my car at the Berjaya resorts car park before taking the boat to Redang.

 

Kuala Besut is some distance away from Merang jetty.

Perhentian islands?

 

Took a 12-hr coach there, din drv many years bk.

 

Remembered there were two: one big & other one small. We stayed at the bigger one then.

 

If you are heading there for diving, water quality was comparable to Redang then though we saw more turtles there.

Resorts are till April. Only got weekly supply boat. The wave around tis time is Hugh.

Yes the waves are big during monsoon season. Otherwise, the lagoon at Redang is like a giant calm swimming pool. Quite lovely really

Tried Tunabay Resort before - very basic amenities, like any beach chalet. Go for full board if you don't wish to hunt for food, which is limited anyway.

 

There's a house coral-reef just 3 meters from the water edge, and the coral fishes will nibble at your torso when you're on the reef.

 

Not sure about the monsoon effect during Jan though.....

I went to one of the islands off Terrenganu during March, which is near the end of the monsoon season, the water is not as clear and the sea very choppy, you should consider an Apr to Aug trip to avoid disappointment.
