Mkl22 Twincharged September 9, 2017 Share September 9, 2017 I drove this (father's car) for a year in 1995 when I just started working. 4 speed manual, smooth, precise, heavy and solid shifting feel like loading a bolt action rifle and the parking brake felt like a GPMG charging handle the recirculating ball power assisted steering was smooth and light, no speed sensing though, brakes were very good and the doors close with a solid thud like a commercial fridge door most of the petrol station pump attendents couldn't find the petrol filler cap hatch.. haha Actually it was quite dangerous to place the tank and filler cap at the back. But those day all bo chap. Many cadillacs also had it at the rear license plate ↡ Advertisement

My grand father bought one pre-facelift of those in 1972, a white 220 with a manual 4 speed gearbox with a red interior. This was a very rare car in my area. Not many people were driving MBs in the countryside. He would let me drive her while going to the boarding school and back home. I was 17 and not holding a driving licence yet! Your description of the feel of the car is exactly what I remember it was like. I was not very happy with the clutch that had a very long travel. The other car I was allowed to drive at that time was my mother's Mini 1100 Special, the exact opposite in terms of driving feel with ultra short travel for the pedals - more switch action than anything else - and overly vague stick for gear change.

ER-3682 Twincharged September 9, 2017 Share September 9, 2017 Same with the w123. Hearsay it was lousy steel from Russia. Actually,it is due to poor Rust Prevention Technology at that time, nothing to do with which Country's Steel,at that time,Japanese Cars also prone to Rust. At the back, beside the number plate! Actually i prefer this location,at least at Petrol Station, any side pump can be use,no need to wait for the side, where your filler located.

Mkl22 Twincharged September 10, 2017 Share September 10, 2017 How about Rolls Royce & Bentley?Falls more into a specialist boutique type of cars. Somewhat mass produced but not at the level of jag. I was talking about really mass produced cars. This somehow they cannot manage. And it's not only in automobiles. In the electronics industry they are the same. The Germans and Japanese are masters of mass production and quality. But now it's getting tough to differentiate, it's a global world now. Everyone uses all everyone's components and all races are everywhere.
