Two things u do to verify:

1) Slowly depress the brake pedal. The brake light should come on everytime when you pedal has moved to the same point. If it ALWAYS lights up when your pedal is near fully pressed, the light activation point of the brake switch needs to be adjusted.

2) Same as 1), slowly depress the brake pedal. If brake lights light up intermittently or doesn't even light up at times, brake switch is failing or totally spoilt already. Replace asap. If it totally fails to light up whenever brake is depressed, on hazard lights when braking to warn drivers behind.

Hope it helps.

My situation is as your 2)

The brake light sometimes does not even come on when I press the pedal down. And also alot of times is got lag one, after .5sec~1sec then light up.

The rubber stopper piece previously broke off like 3 weeks back, I got it fix bcos just a rubber thingy. Never touch the screw below at all regarding the "light activation point" where from my understanding is you meant to screw the nut further in or out depending to "activate" the light am I correct?

Yes you are right. In this case, do replace the brake switch.

Hi guys, my 9yr old Avante Auto-Transmission is not smooth, pickup is draggy and gear doesn't change even at 3K RPM, can't accelerate pass 70km/h.  Diagnostic showed TCM fault.  But even after TCM change, problem still remains.  Now say need to do gearbox overhaul, to resolve gear slipping problem.  Is it worthwhile?  Current mileage is 170k.  Not decided on COE renewal.

Any advise please?

Check how much is it going to cost. A gearbox can cost around the range of 8k ~ 10k. Overhaul should be lower cost but will it be reliable in a long run is uncertain. Can try Harmony Auto workshop as they are specialised in Korean rides, if you haven't. But usually if the car is giving problems like this, renewal of COE is not advisable. Edited by Heartbreakid

Get your mechanic to get a re-conditioned gearbox... or get him to buy a good one from a scrapyard and replace yours until you decide to renew COE... if you do renew then worthwhile to replace with a brand new gearbox... re-conditioned or old gearbox from scrapyard won't cost more than $2000 including installation and everything lar...

Hi Guys,

Thanks.  Went to Pandan Loop Top Speed Motors.  Overhaul gearbox, changed 2 gb mounting.  Car still in workshop now, fine tuning.  Hope it'll last me for another 15 months ... keeping my fingers & toes cross  [grin]

overhaul probably cost a few k and since car left 1 year might as well trade it in/scrap for a brand new car now that coe is low.

I use Carlube, cheap and good. Buy from Giant supermarket... used it for all my cars since 2001.

Actually you can try the Toh Guan area. I fitted a dash recorder with one of garages advertised on MCF. I find them pretty honest. You can try Eclipse Auto. They are a car workshop. Owner is a relatively young chap. But they're located in Ubi area I think.

Mine 2009 avante and still have  4 months for COE to expire and the car suddenly stopped on the roadside while driving and the temperature light came up. Couldn\t start again and towed it to my mechanic. They tried for more than 1 hr and they couldn\t  read the error code and suspect ECU might have failed. Any idea, what could be the other possibility.

Sounds like overheated or the temperature sensor fail causing the ecu to prompt a shut down of the engine?

In the end, what's the issue?

ECU failed. Saw the ECU board has burnt when the mechanic opened the board.
