Hyundai Avante 1.6A Maintenance Cost

I hope we are talking the same symptom:-

1. At stationary, it hesitate to change gear.

For me, when I shift from P->R, there is a delay before it engaged.

Also delay in N->D.

This is definitely solenoid problem.

2. Kicking / knocking when engaging D --> R.

This happens when I want to reverse into parking lot.

Shift from D->R like immediately after car fully stopped will sometimes give a violent knock.

If I wait for 2-3 seconds after full stop and shift, it's OK. So I am practicing this now.

3. Kicking / knocking during highspeed downshift from 4->3.

Usually happens after cruising for long time on 4th,

then floor accelerator to pick up speed for overtaking.

My workshop also noticed (1) and (2) above when they move my car around during servicing. They gave me feedback about it, but since they are not gearbox specialist which they openly tell all their customer, they didn't offer repair advise.

What I had done so far:

a. On receiving the car (127,000km on clock, genuine) --> Replace ATF and filter.

b. At 135,000km, feeling all above symptom --> Replace ATF + 1 bottle additive / cleaner.

c. At 148,000km, after plentiful of instigating the kicking of gearbox (to get the solenoid work hard with cleaner) --> Replace the ATF.

The symptom is very much relieved and gear change is very smooth now. Still get the knock but it's rare now, and it's very mild knock for (3) above.

To reduce cost, I bought Hyundai ATF from Malaysia HyunKia or Mobis stockist for RM85 / 4 liter pack. The additive / cleaner cost me RM35. I still have a bottle of additive in my trunk, with 2 pack of ATF. If you keen to try, I can always pass to you.

To me, it's no harm trying the additive with the intention of overhaul the gearbox if all doesn't go well. Going back to Komoco for a solenoid problem, means changing the entire valve body, if they do that at all. No harm asking though. However, I am ear marking workshops that does gearbox reconditioning in case I need to drop it there for such a job. Will compare to cost of replacing valve body at Komoco.

BTW, my ride is i30cw but it has the same engine / gearbox / mechanical as the Avante.

This is definitely signs of gearbox solenoids failing. There are total 4 solenoids in the gearbox.

There is no benefit to flash or change the ATF oil on solenoid fail.

You need to service your gearbox immediately. Else, it will come a time you will not able to engage into D mode or R mode.

Any workshop that does solenoid replacement? SG or MY also ok

(edited)

Sent to AD and here are the parts that need to be replaced.

- ECU

- Valve Body

- Valve Filter

- Valve Wiring

Any advice if external workshop can handle this at fraction of the cost?

Cos AD will cost around 4k plus. Think will be 5k plus after GST.

Try Eclipse Garage? OR Tong Lee Wee? Edited by teomingern

Any gd advice on the approach when liaising with external workshop to prevent carrot chop?

Since AD already told me the parts to change.  (Even though I am quite skeptical on the ECU change)

I am thinking of these options

Should I

A) ask the workshop for quote directly? Meaning I tell them the parts to change.

B) Let them diagnose the issue without saying.  But this may incur inspection fees

C) Same as A, but I ask for a breakdown and replace the lower cost component first.   Valve body or ECU

Turbocharged

Try Eclipse Garage? OR Tong Lee Wee?

Tong Lee Wee is a car accessories shop. They don't deal with gearbox.

Try Khang's Automatic Transmission. I got a reconditioned gearbox installed for $3K some yrs back.

I would go for AD in this case.

I had checked out the following with couple workshops (not naming which one):

1. Recondition gearbox (your have your own gearbox) $1.8k ~ $2.5k

2. or.. replaced with a recond'ed gearbox $2k ~ $3k (you got someone else's gearbox)

3. Replaced ECU (used, recond) ~ $1k

Added up everything, would be close to 4k.

If AD is quoting 4k++, with a NEW valve body (that house all the solenoids), and NEW ECU, I am definitely game.

If the gears aren't the issue, then should be able to just replace the valve body with a reconditioned one... in that case, the cost would be substantially lower right? Cos the workshop is replacing the entire gearbox with another one... that's more work? Not sure... just thinking aloud...

It doesn’t work that way.

It’s easier to drop a gearbox and replace the entire box, compare to, drop gearbox, open up, dismantle the valve body, replace valve body, and reinstall gearbox

That’s what workshops are doing now. Quick money.

Easier and quicker to replace the gearbox

They take back your old gearbox, send to specialist shop to recondition it, wait for next guy to come and and repeat the above.

Ah yes I see... of course this is easier... but more expensive I suppose... then depends on much the workshop charges vis-a-vis the authorized dealer...

This LCD display on my car started flickering and got dimmer.

The light source behind this LCD display is SMD LED that's soldered to the circuit board. It's not the usual T10 light bulb.

Asked around no one seems to have a solution to repair other than ask me to go find a recond unit.

Of course, plenty of this recond unit on Taobao too. However, the LED matrix behind the LCD could also be aged and might go blinking soon after you replace the unit.

So, other than sourcing for a completely new meter cluster that will cost me a lot, I have decided to do some project on it.

It's quite easy to take the meter cluster out from the dashboard.

6 screws in total.

Then, removing everything down to the circuit board.

Here, the yellow circle shows the offending 3 x 4 SMD LED matrix. One or more of it is dying. As they are connected in series, so the dying one causes all 12 to flicker.

One important thing to do is to mark the needle position of temperature and fuel gauge.

Then, took measure of the SMD LED...

Size is 3528 (3.5mm x 2.8mm)

Found it on Taobao... RMB7.50 for 100 pieces.... ordered it...

Now waiting for the shipment to arrive, and it will be time to buy my friend a meal to do soldering for me...

Reinstalled the meter cluster for the time being.

:)

I cant tell you for avante but for my accent no need to remove handles.

Obviously if you want a good job then get a professional to do it. I went sg garage and jj decal to get my car handles wrapped.

But the sticker did not last so end up I went to tong lee wee to get the chrome cover for the door handle.

Picture of my car here. You can just focus on the door handles. And the bowl behind the handle. The bowl and handles were actually wrapped in the same colour but the door handles kept getting scratches so I put chrome on them.

I tried to DIY but results were ahem.
