Japs and Koreans take great pride and dedication to their work. They are perfectionists, right down to technical detail, design etc. This is in their national culture and culture of their people.

Chinese culture: if can take short cut, will take. Anyhow do also can, dun get caught aysai liao. Serve and fark off, it is only a job. You die your business. Can bluff, will bluff.

It is their attitude to work that sets them apart.

China man dun care about pride, quality, perfectionism. They just want to sell more volume at low cost.

Spot on.... in fact they dont care about anything else as long as they make money... [:(]

Well geely cars are getting better in terms of safety. They score 4 star in EURO ECAP recently from previous 0 star. Ec7 vs CK

i think china car makers have no lack of talent and know-how to make proper / safe cars, but the bosses have other ideas even the designers/engineers come up with good processes and designs [:)]

Boh Liao. Those ang mo will condemn all non ang mon made car more so if its belong to china anyway.

Don't anyhow stereotype leh. Clarkson for instance, isn't even a close representation of British people. In fact he is quite the opposite, loud mouthed & arrogant.

And why Toyota & Lexus sell so well in America? Europeans typically do not buy Japanese or Korean cars as the styling was in general dull & handling non inspirating, & not really attractively priced. But most agreed that Japanese cars have good reliability.

But on many magazines these day,s you can see Koreans car put in comparison tests with establish cars & score good points, even top the comparison. In fact its easier to find a new Korea car than Japanese car in Germany now. The Korean cars are doing quite well in Europe at the moment.

When you make good cars, people will buy.

I remember a friend showing me a video on YouTube on one any mo condemning gtr even though everything is good. The only reason he gave is GTR got no soul.

Then it is [knife]

If not fast, can tune faster.

If not comfortable, improve suspension.

If not luxurious, maybe add leather.

No soul... What can they do to improve?

Food for thought in wiki.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Automotive_in...public_of_China

Just some newbie thoughts.

what are the necessary ingredients to make a good b&b car?

Chassis?

Engine?

ECU?

Suspension / comfort?

Interior?

Europe goes turbo , while japanese goes hybrid. Where will be the future in 5-10years time?

With emphasis on green tech, will EV/ hybrid be new level playing field for engine manufacturer?

What are the most expensive part (be it raw material, test, design, ...) to making a 1.6 B&B car?

The above wiki has the following note:

"The Wall Street Journal reported that the government of China will be forcing foreign carmakers to disclose their electric vehicle technology secrets before the vehicles are allowed to be sold in China. The current Chinese automotive policy states that a foreign carmaker must form a joint-venture with a Chinese carmaker if the former plans to sell its electric vehicles there, with the latter holding 51% stakes while the former is only allowed to hold 49% stakes.

Due to the threat by the Chinese government, Toyota postponed the launch of the current-generation Prius until they have been confirmed about the plan."

Does vertical integration help for auto industry in PRC land, since the manufacturing is powerful, and will be more so in the next 5-10 years. Government is rich enough to fund some local companies, if they want to build the local auto industry.

There are

How did Korean car makers build up their car industries? via merger, reverse engineering? employ foreign designers (ex audi for Kia)? Can PRC replicate?

Watched a repeat of TopGear (episod in china) and the 3 men condemned whatever cars made in china.

I think today, china's cars are not really up to international standard yet in terms of safety, performance, etc but since these B&B cars are for their domestic markets where the majority of buyers dont really know anything better, china car makers will continue to churn out millions of mediocre cars yet still find buyers queue up, end of the days making tons of money.

Is there a incentive for them to make better cars, to match the quality/performance etc of say VW etc, let alone the highend conti/jap/korean cars?

Those china buyers who have the taste / money for better cars, in typical chinese 'culture', will buy imported cars, coz no china car makers have the prestige / history / brandnames to attract buyers who want not only good cars, but also 'face'/status only brands like Merc/BWM (RR also) etc could provide.

Patrioism is more or less non existent when it comes to the rich, except state owned companies buying mic highend cars for their bosses?

Bottomline, will it be almost unforeseable china made cars will ever match the quality / status of highend foreign-made cars? not in the next 10/20 years? The expanding domestic B&B car markets are big enough to occupy them for a long time, export is hardly something they have time to think about.

I thinks China car will up the international standard some day , however , it all depends on manufactuers , quality is the best way to support one brand , if they do want to set up a good reputation in automotive industry .

Geely should bring in the Xing Yue, so buyers can replace the Geely logo with BMW logo and pass it on as the BMW X6.

Can you differentiate between the the Geely and BMW?

I'm not a big fan of the SUV coupe shape but Merc GLE Coupe looks incredibly similar as well.

It's not a question of can or not.

It is just about WHEN the China designed/built cars will become mainstream in quality and acceptance.

Agree.  Frankly, I have been very impressed with the new Geely and MGs, which I've seen in person.

Purely from an engineering/capabilities perspective, they are manufacturing the largest number of cars in the world, for the largest brands in the world via their local JVs, and paying above market for the top automotive talents in Europe.

Quality is arguably there or almost there.  But perception and acceptance clearly is not.  To me, it feels a little like 2012 in the handphone world.

That said, while an early adopter may be willing to pay $1k to try a Huawei/OnePlus phone, but will be a harder decision to shell out $100k to try a Chinese car !
