Nothing will happen on flat ground the the SOP for on slop is.

1) In D. Hold Brake.

2) Shift to N. Still Holding Brake.

3) Pull Handbrake. Still in N.

4) Release Brake. Car will shift weight to handbrake.

5) Put to P.

This is to make sure the weight of the car (stress) is on the handbrake and not gearbox.

Really arh??!

Oh gosh, I have been doing this: from D, I step foot brake, then shift gear to P. Then I pull hand brake.

Will anything go wrong to my gearbox?

Exactly! [thumbsup]

but i practice this everytime I park..it became a habit.

If u just put to P and let the weight rest on the gearbox.. when u try shifting from P to D again.. u can feel resistance. but if you let the weight rest on handbrake..no resistance very smooth.

Haha.. not good for gearbox i guess. Just dont do it from now on..

Also remember when moving off have to do the opposite.

Shift from P to D before releasing the handbrake.

i usually park using P and dun use handbrake.... unless there is a slope.

i heard from mechanic is that at P, a small shaft in the gearbox is holding and is not a very strong.

so advisable to use handbrake on a slope.

No worries. Nothing will happen to your gearbox.

Just avoid doing so next time. :D

correct.. this is what i do all the time. always put the stress on the handbrake, which is cheaper to change.

The difference between holding brake and handbrake is 4 wheel and 2 wheel brake only ma!

Why go so many steps?

Had to revive this thread due to an issue I'm having....

Is it ok if the car continues to slide downhill on a slope after step no.4 and only stops when brake padel is depressed and 'P' engaged?

not very ok if you have pulled all the way up. Get the handbrake cable re-tightened.

Slight move is OK on steep slope as handbrake only hold rear brake. But, if car continues to slide down, then something is not right.

You need to consider also about how steep is the slope, and how many passengers in the car, during the moment of sliding down....

Of course it's not okay.

Your car shouldn't be rolling when the handbrake is fully engage/pulled up.

It means that your handbrake is not effective enough to stop your car.

Go and have your handbrake cable tighten.
