Kiadaw 6th Gear March 29, 2012 Share March 29, 2012 Doctor did not know he cause accident. A doctor said he did not know he had hit two cyclists during an accident when he lost control of his car and ended up killing one of the riders. General practitioner Teo Tiong Kiat, 64, told the court on Tuesday that he thought his car must have hit the two cyclists when he walked back to the accident scene along Clementi Road on March 21, 2010. The Straits Times reported that Teo admitted to causing the death of freelance writer Benjamin Mok Chee Kong, 35, and injuring another cyclist, Bertram Leong Poh Meng, 24, by failing to keep a proper lookout when swerving from the centre to the left lane. He testified that he was driving along Clementi Road on his way home after dinner when he felt the car swerving to the left and wobbling. He said he lost control of the car and heard a loud sound. When he finally got it together, he drove down the slip road to Upper Bukit Timah Road and parked at the carpark to inspect his badly damaged bonnet, windscreen and roof. The Straits Times reported that Teo thought it was amazing that his car was so badly damaged and yet he did not have an injury. Later, his office manager came to the carpark and pointed out the missing front number plate. Teo then walked back to the scene where he saw police and his number plate by the side of the road. Teo said that if he had realised that he was involved in an accident, he would have helped those injured at the time. "I also want to add that as a doctor, it is my duty and my training to render assistance to the poor, and to the sick, all the more so if I had known that I had caused injury to somebody, I would have definitely rendered my assistance," he said. ↡ Advertisement
Antlau 1st Gear March 29, 2012 Share March 29, 2012 Ignorance is not an excuse.... well we have created a hole (precedence) in the earlier Lexus case, and some people will exploit that excuse... If a person is not aware of things surrounding him during driving, then the person is not safe for driving and should be put off the roads... revoke the license, and impose indefinite ban on driving... since the person already admitted that it is incapable of driving safely... Haha...another fine example of Monkey see, monkey do. Once met an accident, must construct a reasonable and acceptable excuse and you will be scot free with fine. Nowadays it seem that if you chut excuses, more or less you are safe. Excuses like the stock car sound system too good and when hit something, you cannot hear you hit anything. It seem like nowadays this is the new trend in car hit \7 run accident...

Kb27 Supersonic March 30, 2012 Share March 30, 2012 On a side note, cyclists are getting very bold nowadays. They ride anywhere, even expressway, regardless of safety. Just saw one riding on a Queensway underpass and holding up traffic.
Thestig Clutched March 30, 2012 Share March 30, 2012 I would have thought that with the intense level of hatred for cyclists on the road, the drivers of MCF would have actually given the Dr. a commendation instead of an online bashing.

Just saw one riding on a Queensway underpass and holding up traffic. Last week i saw a cyclist going on the AYE left lane from bukit merah towards NUH direction in the morning peak hours, a 3-wheel motorkike LTA enforcement was trailing him all the way, when both went up the slope before turning into science park, i expected the enforcement guy to stop and warn him, but he didnt.... more like a case of he was 'escorting' the cyclist from the rear to protect the backside of the cyclist.... Sabian Turbocharged March 30, 2012 Share March 30, 2012 What is the correct road usage for cyclists? Single file or can they ride 2 or 3 abreast and take up the extreme left lane? I always make it a point to filter right and give them the whole lane as I don't want them to lose their balance end up hitting them when they fall in front of my path and it becomes my fault. Just saw one riding on a Queensway underpass and holding up traffic. Just give them space whenever you can even if they encroach into your lane. They are a vulnerable group whether they know it or not. I have my fair share of them riding two abreast on a single-lane road and have to on occasions patiently wait until the opposite lane is clear before attempting to overtake them. Some also like ride haphazardly on the roads, zoom past across zebra crossings, ride against the flow of traffic, etc. In the event of any accidents with them, motorists most probable will kena even if the cyclists are at fault. And I don't think any driver will feel good about it especially if the cyclists are hurt or even worst .. And of course if you do not drive a Lexus, have excellent sound-proofed rides or access to good (read $$$$) lawyers then good luck also... ↡ Advertisement
