The US always had right of navigation around the world. They move around with their navy unfettered imposing their power on others. Historically, China never had that power.

Seeing the meteoric rise of China's economy in the past 2 decades has scared the Americans. They feared China's huge economy will lead to increased influence around the world, a huge and advanced military, arms exports to non US allies around the world, and the ability to reduce America's power projection in Asia.

So sometime during Obamas administration, they developed a containment strategy to counter Chinas rise. Get all the nations surrounding China to contain China. If China doesn't do US' bidding, then various blockades can be implemented. The blockades effectively cut off Chinas ability to move goods and therefore collapse their imports and exports. This is a threat to Chinas existence.

Obviously, if your country is going to be threatened like that, you'd plan responses to counter those threats. Logical, no?

So china's counter: 1) China did belt and road. A land network to move goods in and out of China through friendly and neutral countries. Why did they do this when they already had efficient maritime routes? Because, the US controls all the seas in Asia! And BRI option neutralizes the US' effectiveness to shut Chinas trade down.

2) Secure the south china seas by establishing island outposts which protects the maritime traffic in the areas. Most of the traffic btw is going to and fro to china from around the world.

3) improve their naval and missile forces to deter America. As their weapons are not superior to America's. But China need not have weapons which can defeat America. Think about it. Why would they do that to their best customer!... Lol. China simply need weapons which will prevent  America from winning AND make the loss incurred from any military action as "not worth it".

While we see the CCP as warlike monsters, the truth is America has created this monster by economically enabling them throughout the decades and posing threats of containment upon them.

If Sg does the same we can save 15bn or more a year! Only need to pay for one IDD call. Maybe use Skype that can be saved also! 

 

Anyway China has just hooted 2 missiles into the South China Sea.  Can take out popcorn if hits any passing US ship.
