actually nowadays alot of cars just turn on foglamp and drive at night. quite common since LTA don't really enforce it.

Either they have too much money or they do not know what they are doing Lor. :p

The only reason to turn on the fog light is when there is real fog.

With Heavy fog, your head light will reflect back and you will not see a thing.

So the right SOP when driving in real fog

1) turn on the fog light, Both front and real(if any)

2) turn off head light.

The fog light will help you see the road a Nd marking.

Saying this from driving experience in Europe, China and America.

wholeheartedly agreed. Many make the mistake of not turning off the main beams and then complain the fog lamps aren't making any difference, not realising that the mains are still reflecting back at them and blinding them.

Another situation - albeit not common in SG - where (properly aimed) fogs are useful is on unlit narrow mountain/curvy roads at night, even in clear weather. The fogs will help light up the two edges of the road, esp for cars without active headlamps. I spend more time driving in such situations than in true fog.

This was in the mountainous Pu Chi Fa region of Chiang Rai, Thailand, on a 50km night drive back to hotel, no fog. Early morning 4am was foggy when I went up to see sunrise.

Another self-pwn situation to use fogs is when driving at high speed on dark unlit highways at night, when u want far-field vision not near-field.
