Car insurance company quotes me $4,950 -- just to replace Camry's rear bumper

STOMPer yoshiki17 received a letter from a car insurance company that stated the replacement of a 2007 Toyota Camry's rear bumper would cost $4,950. The STOMPer had checked with several workshops and was quoted a maximum of $950.

Said the STOMPer:

"Overcharging for car repair.

"I received a letter from a motor insurance company stating that the replacement of a 2007 Toyota Camry's rear bumper would cost SGD$4950.

"Had enquired from several workshops and was quoted SGD$750-950 for a new rear bumper including spray painting and installation that would take approximately 3 days.

"Factoring in replacement vehicle rental for five days, all in total should only cost SGD$2.5k-3k.

"Is this opportunistic behaviour by appointed workshops of insurance companies?"

The photo was edited by the STOMPer.

STOMPer was unclear about who the Camry belonged to but likely to be the car he knocked onto in an accident.

Based on BOLA and without any other info given, likely the STOMPer was at fault and he had to LLST pick up the tab as his excess would not have covered this amount.

Drive safe, bros!

i bumped and scratched, literally scratched, a taxi bumper. the taxi driver wanted $1000 on the spot, i refused as a small spray job was only needed. he threatened to claim insurance and i told him to claim. guess what? insurance company sent a letter telling me they have PAID $5000 to him!

all these, without asking me the extend of the damage.

One thing you can try.

Discharge yourself from ins when such overly high claims come from taxi.

They have to sue you for the amount.

Not easy to sue.

not surprising la, the quote from Borneo Motors for a Vios bumper that is mildly dented is $3600.

ADs typically overcharge and it is just bad luck to kiss backside of a filmsy jap car bumper [laugh]

Hey this sounds like a plan if you are ready to fight and you think you can win the inflated claim made against you. It looks similar to when the insurance company tries not to payout during a claim and say you have illegally modified your car right?

I wonder if your NCD is affected if you discharge yourself from your insurance. In theory it shouldn't be affected right?

I wonder what other possible repercussions should we also consider when taking this route if its even possible..... anyone can advise?

I thought the party responsible can decide on where to go for the repair works & not necessary to the victim's designated WS which in all likelihood will be back to the AD?

i know.....what i mean is there is no additional benefit to getting a bumper repaired by AD vs repaired by another workshop. ADs specialises in engine related area repair. panel beating, spray painting and bumper attaching is not something they have competitive advantage in skills.

if the victim insists, directly he doesn't lose anything. indirectly he would have contributed to such inefficiencies and bring up the premium cost in the vehicular insurance industry.

Exactly.

And we all know any repair amount less than the excess, we have to foot it out of our own pocket [bigcry]

So in the event that the victim insists on sending their "victimized" rides to ADs, what can we do?

Desist or LLST pay up?

for me i will always try to make the victim see light and persuade him.

the personality of hte victim will determine whether he accepts or not.

can even try to compensate small sum for his inconvenience on top of the car repair and alternative car hire costs.

actually not many will choose AD.....

because unless they 100% certain... if not, they will ask you pay for claim first then claim for you... for rental of vehicle.. you got to come out cash first.... then claim later....

At the end of the day if the victim still insist that they want to get their AD to repair for them, if we say nothing ironically it will be hoped that the amount exceeds the excess amount so that our insurer meh the bulk amount and we foot the rest but of course with such a case our premiums goes up the next time... [:(]
