Elmo 4th Gear May 21, 2012 Share May 21, 2012 (edited) SG Hard Truth Found this from a FB link sharing. I think it says a lot what some of us have been feeling but we didn't have the stats or facts to substantiate. Coming from Prof Koh, this is a good read. CKP 3rd Gear May 21, 2012 Share May 21, 2012 Prof Tommy Koh cited the same hard truth. "High competitiveness, high wages and high equity" can coexist, which I had brought up previously in the MCF thread on "Prof Lim Chong Yah wage shock therapy".
Tom_kkh 1st Gear May 21, 2012 Share May 21, 2012 (edited) $5000+ for a cleaner Why FT in singapore never go there? u know how much is a simple meal in europe? there is no Sin$3 mix vege rice there hor u cannot compare what u earn here and spend here, with what u can earn there to spend here... Vid Hypersonic May 21, 2012 Share May 21, 2012 u know how much is a simple meal in europe? u cannot compare what u earn here and spend here, with what u can earn there to spend here... I stayed in Europe for several years. I know how much the things are. Still that is a hell lot more. If food and transport cost 3 times more than here, they still can live comfortably. Cleaners here earn $800, cleaners there earn $5000. That's more than 6 times.
Vid Hypersonic May 21, 2012 Share May 21, 2012 The truth is that we pay these workers such low wages not primarily because their productivity is inherently low, but largely because they are competing against an unlimited supply of cheap foreign workers. Because cheap workers are so plentiful, they tend to be employed unproductively. In the Nordic countries, unskilled workers are relatively scarce and thus deployed more productively, with higher skills, mechanisation, and better organisation. What is the solution? The solution is for the State to reduce the supply of cheap foreign workers or introduce a minimum wage or to target specific industries, such as the hospitality industry, for wage enhancement. Now, that's the HARD TRUTH!

That's more than 6 times. yes, very true for the $5000.even if their income tax is at a high of 30% or more.they still earn a hell lot more than a cleaner here.and also their high income tax is a safety net for them when they are old and jobless or sick. their healthcare expenses are cheap because of their high income tax. that's why you can see cleaners from europe/us/oz coming here for holiday but have you seen cleaner here going over there for holiday? the only place where cleaners in sgp can holiday is in batam or cowboyland. Singapore only got people. getting fatter also.. humm maybe we can sell body parts to fund this system. When it comes to natural resources, the important ones that matters most are oil and natual gas. Among the nordic countries, only Norway is a net exporter while the rest need to import oil. However, none of Nordic countries have ports that lie on international strategic shipping and trade routes like Singapore. Don't ever underestimate how Singapore's strategic location and natural deep harbour which by the way are Singapore's very important natural resources, even though many people mistakently say Singapore has no natural resources (for argument's sake) have allowed several key industries to flourish and contribute significantly to GDP. Elmo 4th Gear May 21, 2012 Author Share May 21, 2012 I think the main purpose of comparison is the income disparity between top and bottom earners and not the amount per se. We also don't know the inflation rate there. What I find interesting is Prof Koh's observation about their education system and childcare. These are areas we can really improve on. I have never understood why we spent so much on education, stress our kids and ourselves, top in SE Asia, and foreign students flocked in to study in our system but yet our companies' top CEOs mostly foreigners? Our locals are just not good enough? What are we studying for - to be employees? ↡ Advertisement
