The risk to their political careers is extremely high if they go for SMCs so they always secure themselves comfortably inside a GRC so to remain untouchable.

(Unfortunately Georgie experienced first hand that infallible belief no longer hold true...)

I do not think any minister will be crazy enough to volunteer themselves to fight in SMC even if the PM is agreeable to it.

Losing mean being out of both the cabinet & parliament, period.

That's the hidden reason for having GRCs. Targeting the lack of credible opposition. Thankfully, WP has proven them wrong last time and last night.

The interesting question is which best men and women team P*P will field in Aljunied?

Not forgetting, there'll be other battlegrounds that are at risk to them.

It wont be the best members, it will be the worst members; those who they are trying to get rid of.

I agree. The risk is high and the gain is low. They would rather use their 'heavy weigh' to their full advantage and go for something larger. It's like asking LTK to go win another SMC...WP will rather use his popularity and track record for something more substantial. Even if lose also more worth it then to lose at an SMC election.

Consider yourself as PAP leaders in GE2016 and you want to win back Aljunied GRC. What will be your strategy ?

1. Field one minister + 4 MPs ? If you lose, you lose big.

2. Field just 5 MPs? Chances of winning is almost zero without heavy weights.

3. Cut Aljunied into 5 SMCs and fight 1-to-1? It's untested strategy but PAP will receive national and international wide criticism for such smelly tactics (well, not that they play clean all these while).

Historically, it has been proven that once a ward falls under opposition party, it takes another 3-4 elections to win it back. Moreover, with Aljunied and HG town council combined resources, things will only get better for the residents. So, GE2016 does not look good for PAP unless they can win back people's faith with u-turn policies and stop playing "elites". I don't believe importing new citizens will swing PAP votes significantly yet.

WP please work hard for GE 2016!!!! [rifle]

Easy lah, just send any MP due for retirement there. If successful, then stay on for one more term. If not successful, then just retire as per plan.

I think the logic is the reverse. It is not so much the ministers that are in danger, it is their other PAP colleagues in the GRC that will be vulnerable if there is no minister to anchor the team. THAT is the hard truth.

HG and aljunied will stay as they are because they are under opposition hands.
