Chinese megacity limits new car sales

Posted: 02 July 2012 2323 hrs

BEIJING: China's booming southern city of Guangzhou has imposed a cap on the number of cars allowed to be sold in an effort to curb worsening traffic and pollution, state media reported on Monday.

Guangzhou, one of the biggest cities in China with a population of more than 16 million according to the Chinese press, will issue registration plates for only 120,000 small and medium-sized passenger cars for the next 12 months.

The policy is aimed at "ensuring the effective flow of the city's transportation and protecting and improving the air quality," said a city government statement posted online after the weekend announcement.

The number of cars that will be allowed to be sold over the next year is roughly half the total sold in 2011  , according to reports in the state media.

Guangzhou had 2.4 million cars by the end of May, more than double the number five years ago, according to a report in the China Business News.

It becomes the third Chinese city, after the capital, Beijing, and Guiyang in the country's southwest, to introduce registration plate limits in an effort to combat the escalating number of cars on China's roads.

I think they meant issuing passes only for small and medium sized cars, meaning big cars are not allowed to be registered. Their government policies are favourable towards the peasants. Commies ftw!

I think the small and medium sized cars here they mean passenger cars like sedan and MPV. Big sized cars are for example lorries, trucks or buses. It's not that 1.6L cannot buy but 4L Ferrari can anyhow buy lah :D

still better than the capitalist approach of the COE. only the rich need apply. the poor?... wait till u got $$$ first...

thou nothing is perfect. their allocation system would result a lot of corruption and black market trading...

however, even thou black market, it's money in the market, back to the market, unlike COE. Your Money goes into the Government's coffer.

I am familiar with the city of Guangzhou. Last time always go there for the Canton Trade Fair twice a year in spring and autumn.

The size of the metropolitan area is so big that without transport such as taxi and MRT, you can walk until your legs bleed... Guangzhou is actually a conglomeration of several ancient cities and towns that merged together after modernisation and population growth.

And the MRT stations are not as close to each other as Singapore's. Really walk until legs bleed....

Good thing is their Volkswagen taxi fares are much cheaper than Singapore's.

Many countries and cities have considered schemes similar to ERP or COE in the last 10-20 years, but usually rejected because they could not get popular vote or faced violent protests.

this is singapore: the people just adapt themselves to whatever govt schemes / plots :D
