The Land Transport Authority (LTA) has fined rail operator SMRT $2 million for two major disruptions last December.

The penalty - $1 million each for the Dec 15 and Dec 17 incidents on the North-South Line - is the maximum penalty under the Rapid Transit Systems Act.

In a release, the LTA said SMRT had failed to 'exercise due diligence and vigilance expected of a public transport operator, and to maintain its network in good and efficient working condition'. It added that its internal investigations had found that both incidents were preventable.

The authority said it will continue to work closely with SMRT to implement the Committee of Inquiry's recommendations.

It will also work with the rail operators to put in place a 'more holistic and robust framework' for maintenance issues, so problems can be detected and fixed early.

The $2 million fine will be donated to the Public Transport Fund to help needy families with transport fares.

So...? left pkt take out.. right pkt go in.. Raise fare ==> commutter pays more..

Raise rent ==> commuter that buy breakfast from the store pays more...

Eventually, dividend to shareholder remains the same... ha haha

LTA, shld limit the dividend given to shareholders.. for failure to run the company to meet social obligation.

Agree. Down the road, SMRT will report lower profits then ask for fare increase.

S$2mil should be compensated for the inconvenieces caused to all commuters.

SMRT mistakes at our expenses it's not fair and commuters should be compensated instead.

Welcome to Singapore!

its a city for the rich and rich only. The govt in SG did a "wonderful" job doing a business out of every single thing in this city. Soon its AIR in it will be charge soon. It will subsidize for the "needy Families" thru its amazingly mysterious "Fines" systems.. [laugh]
