The Catholic High School (CHS) is openly soliciting for "gifts and presents" from the parents of its students, to "touch the teacher's life", in its coming Teachers' Day Celebration.

According to the CHS memo which was forwarded to TR Emeritus (TRE) by a parent, the event is organized by CHS Management Committee, CHS Alumni and the Parent Support Group (PSG).

The memo wrote that the PSG Exco is appealing to parents who would like to show their heartfelt gratitute to contribute a present to this event, and listed the 'proposed' presents as "shopping vouchers, dining vouchers, current digital gadgets or home appliance, tour packages, etc".

Parents are asked to deposit the gifts into a box at the Primary or Secondary School's General office by 27th August 2012.

The memo also listed the contact person for parents with enquiries as Bee Yen (Primary) and Winy Quek (Secondary).

Thought teachers as civil servant should not expect showers of material gifts as they are in the public service.

In my days, I simply just gave flowers and cards.

Hmmm.... This is indeed disgusting.... It's alrite to ask for a small gift but to specify such stuffs as a gift is highly inappropriate...

Some peope may argue how great teachers' sacrifices and contributions to children are. But, imo, teachers are paid to do their job. There's no difference (as far as importance is concerned) between a cleaner and teacher's job. So, why the special treatment and solicitation of gifts???

Some companies have already stopped soliciting presents/gifts for their annual dinner & dance from suppliers (governance issue).

Pretty sure there will be some rich parents who will pull all stops to donate a "impressive present" for the teachers...

this will guarantee special treatment for their child in future...

Sad that Schools have to resort to this... teachers nowadays dun feel appreciated by hand made cards anymore????

Memo said Parent Support Group (PSG) Exco appealing for gifts, not the school.

Yes its wrong, but the request might not have come from the school, let alone the teachers, but from over zealous parents. [laugh]

Don't shoot the school or teachers yet.

This is one upcoming problem which I think MOE should step in. They should ban any kind of gifts. Parent are under pressure to buy gifts for their kids teacher. While teacher do have their problem too. My wife is a child care teacher and every year she need to prepare +120 gifts for her students. Every year during teacher's day she received 100s of useless small gifts which is to me a total waste of money. Hope MOE ban such practice. It's the same for donation. Some schools required parent to donate min $100 or more.
