i have an opportunity of going into the area of sales...as pre-sales consultant, also in IT

the salary is quite okay.. some but not huge increment.

i am in the middle management doing operations and client support with quite a bunch of people doing the dirty work for me

this one is an individual contributor.

pulling factors are the potential of raking more $$, as in the area of sales

the product is a new/upcoming and consider the 'in thing' now

push factor is the fact that being new,a lot has to be done/ironed out/fixed & fought. definitely more siong than current

also, i may fail in this role...then tio pok.. finding a job with matching pay at 40yr old can be daunting..

the question is.. would this switch be a downgrade and detrimental to my career?

is it worth the risk?

actually, i know i am already at the upper band in my job.. a breakthrough will be real difficult.

in addition to true ability, got to lick many many balls and luck is also factor.

it doesn't help with so much FT that can do your job at half price.

it just happen that this presales opportunity came along.. they can match my current salary and this set me thinking...

career progression for tech presales is to eventually do full accounts and sales right? this is where the $$ is at..

You must first assess the following:

1) Are you sales material?

2) Are you sales material?

3) Are you sales material?

4) Are you willing to take the risk if so?

decide after CNY 2013.....

year end bonus coming, why switch now...

it was an internal referral bro... i will still get my bonus

it is a referral from a colleague from another department, whom i worked with a long time ago..

the issue is my company is not very tolerant towards poor performers.. there is a risk of getting fired if i cannot do my job..

That will largely depends on you...yourself isn't it? I have no idea who you are so it's hard to give constructive comments.

A lot of time ppl will like to focus on their own gains but never quite really step back to look at the bigger picture. Anyways...

Looking at the words "sales", "IT", "in-thing" means a lot of other ppl are doing or will be doing the same thing. So what makes you stand out from the competition to really rake in the so called $$ you mentioned?

You stay put also got risk what. Actually IMO you are in the best position to decide what risk to take.

Anything happens, can always be a teacher! [laugh] Or part-time, adjunct teaching in your area of specialisation, to tide you over in case of crisis as you mentioned.

No worries, they are always recruiting cos young teachers throw in the towel pretty quickly - what with the bad attitude kids these days - but you being more mature, would be able to handle the situation better and stress-proof already.

sales need to commit, can you?

if im in the 20s or early 30s, i will change.

but since 40s you should stick to your job as you have a upper hand.

My first job as an engineer, then got transferred to do marketing, everything went well except pay department so I decided to jump.

Went to do sales, it's more of a project sales but boss strangle and micro manage me daily that I can't breath, so I leave. 2nd job as a sales, going smooth until 1 mth later, director left without notice and he is the one that employ me... So the owner give us very unreasonable offers, we stay on but it just got worst, no car allowance and pay back to the first job, don't even pay CPF. So I have to leave again to current job, doing very well now.

It's a combination of factor you need to look at, will the future manager or department able to click or not, is the company stable or not, is the product that you will be selling moveable or not, doing right thing at the right time doesn't always prove to be successful.

Is the position a replacement or a brand new position?

Most people when reach 40, all drives (sex, work, play, etc) slow down. Be wary that for sales, you need to chiong.

Not true ley, I had seen ah peks in 50s, 60s still very sexually active and likes to play alot.

I have a colleague who switched job around 3 years 3 years back.

Changed to an American company with a much better job scope and pay. Pay almost doubled (because American company doesn't give bonus at year end so higher pay kinda compensated that)

2 months back he kana retrenched because the company is downsizing. If he has stayed in the old job, he will be in the higher end of middle management now.

Just for you to keep in consideration...

Are you sales material? this is the most impt question that u must know about yourself.

Personally for me, i know i'm not a sales material. I'm a very people person but it doesnt mean i'm sales material. 2 different things.

2nd, from my interaction with industry people, i see the trend of when they are young, they were in sales, and chiong like hell. As they go older (like you), they tend to go into operations, after-sales support. It's natural progression. As you go older, your stamina is no longer there. Your mind works slower. and there are younger ppl who can compete with you

In your situation, you are going the reverse way. So be v careful of this movement.

sales not easy ley, even if the starting salary is good, commission is good.

it also depends on the market demand of your product/service, may not be perpetually there.

need stamina for it as well, run here run there.

just something you need to consider.
