More motorists caught with illegal, fanciful car number plates

By Hu Jielan | Posted: 08 November 2012 2058 hrs

SINGAPORE: The number of drivers caught for having illegal and fanciful car licence plates has gone up.

Snazzy and stylish, but many motorists who display them on their vehicles do not even know that they are illegal.

Some plates have wrong fonts or improper font sizes, while others come with blue LED lights.

The Land Transport Authority (LTA) said the monthly figures for drivers found flouting the rules have doubled in nearly two years.

There were 242 cases per month in 2010 and 542 cases per month for the first eight months of this year. In 2011, the number of drivers caught for illegal licence plates was 335 per month.

The LTA guidelines stipulate that approved licence plates should have letters and figures that are 70mm high, 50mm wide and 10mm broad.

The penalty is a fine of up to $1,000 or a jail term of up to three months.

Workshop owners told Channel NewsAsia most drivers do not know that their licence plates were not approved.

Iris Seah, owner of Chuan Heng Signcrafts, said: "The most common for improper car plates are either that they are too reflective or the fonts are not approved by LTA, and the reason that they are doing this is they just want to make their car more beautiful."

Francis Lim, Secretary of Singapore Motor Workshop Association, said: "I think the most common reason is everyone wants their car to look good, more on cosmetic and also it is easy to install."

STOMPer Tessa caught sight of a car with an unusual licence plate in Bangkit Road. It read, 'LIKE A BOSS'.

Said the STOMPer:

"This driver changed his car plate to 'LIKE A BOSS'.

"Here are two photos taken in front of the car park barrier at Bangkit.

"Was on the way to Bangkit on my father's car this Tuesday, Nov 6 when I saw this 'unique' car.

"It's actually illegal to do stuff like this however some people find it cool~"

Twincharged

Waste time. Mod car I can understand. Mod licence plate??? Hmmmmm.. Stupiak.

Some mod license plate so harder for people to see their license plate? My neighbor license plate has really small letters and they are grey on black background. I think hit-and-run also no one can see what his license plate number is.

Think they try to have these plates to escape speed/traffic lights cameras.

Some are really reflective that it's hard to see even when one is behind them, not to mention those speed/traffic light camera.

Those making these plates usually will tell the car owners it will not pass inspection.

You and ur ideas; why don't u ask lta clamp down on shops selling gum or cough syrup etc. what fault has it got to do w the shop owners? They didn't instruct those motorists to mod their license plate illegally, in fact I believe they would even advise the car owners That its not legal but the car owners still want it.

Neutral Newbie

I was looking at the LTA website for the rules on licence plate.

1) The main criteria is the 1cm broad, 5cm wide n 7cm high letters requirement.

Therefore I don't understand why 'fancy fonts' that conforms to the size be illegal.

2) The entire plate dimension must have 2cm margin from the nearest letters on the left/right side, and 1cm margin from the letter on the top and bottom.

Therefore if those national flag or EU stars are set at 2cm away from the first Letters on the left, then technically it's not part of the licence plate and will not be considered as ornaments or advertistment that LTA deem illegal.

3)LTA specified" Vehicles normally have White letters and figures on black background....."

Then those car with the standard embossed dull Silver lettering on black background should be illegal as well, which almost half of all cars are guilty of! But LTA did not penalized those car with dull silver letters.

And those reflective silver plates should not be illegal too. The news laste night, said the silver letters as 'TOO Reflective', but there is no mention on the reflective ness Level for the letters on LTA rules.

There was a time where Sticker licence plate was deem 'illegal'. I think it's a myth. As long as you fullfill the dimensions and color, it should be ok. Anyone kena sticker licence plate fine?

My car front licence is sticker based, I have verified my radiator temperature is 2degreed lower, after I replace the steel licence plates that was half blocking the bumper radiator air intake

Anyway, I am surprised the so many are really caught per month. LTA is really working hard. Well done.

The authorities should really focus more on catching errant and reckless drivers who flout traffic rules and endanger others' live rather than picking on licence plates.
