ERP rates: 'More cuts than hikes'

SINGAPORE - Over the past two years, Electronic Road Pricing (ERP) rates have fallen 11 times and increased eight times, said Minister of Transport Lui Tuck Yew in Parliament yesterday.

Taking into account the reduction in hours - for half-hour blocks - in gantries along the Central Expressway (CTE), the Singapore River, and on Saturdays, there would, in fact, be 25 rate decreases, he added.

Mr Lui cited these figures in response to Member of Parliament (Nee Soon GRC) Lee Bee Wah, who asked about the rationale behind the recent increase in ERP rates for six gantries leading to the CTE and East Coast Parkway (ECP).

Mr Lui explained that ERP gantry rates are adjusted generally by S$1 when traffic speeds fall outside the optimal range of 45kmh to 65kmh on expressways.

Traffic speeds on the CTE and ECP had fallen below this range, especially during morning peak hours, leading to the upward adjustments in rates.

Contrary to general impression however, the ERP rates along the CTE between 7.30am to 9.30am have actually gone down since the beginning of last year.

"Along the CTE, if you look at entire South-bound stretch, (at the) beginning of 2011, from 7.30am to 9.30am, it was between S$1.50 to S$6. Now, even with the latest increase, for the same period, it is between S$1 to S$5, so I think that puts a certain perspective in the increase," he said.

As such, there will also be no road tax reduction in spite of the recent hikes, given that they are "routine adjustments in response to the latest traffic conditions".

Mr Lui also said that there are no plans to scrap the evening ERP along the CTE when further questioned by Ms Lee.

"We

We are kids who failed maths... fallen 11 times increased 8 times... playing with numbers again...

if 11 times, every time only reduce $0.50 but increased 8 times every time $1 it is still a hike of $2.50... just give us the actual figures rather than the number of times... [knife]

Offering a choice? either pay $5 to reach home before 8pm or reach home later? Hmmm, let me see how it will works with Work Life Balance and increased birth rates... Well hack, so long got money who cares we still got FT / FW to import [whip]

Its like some MP who mentioned that people choose to live in Punggol/Sengkang:

"More Singaporeans are choosing to live in the Sengkang and Punggol areas and so the LTA conducted a technical feasibility study to see if we can convert the existing LRT system from a one-car system to a two-car system.

Remember, its your choice...... if you live in the north east, you are going to have to use the ERP-festooned CTE and KPE...... save on housing cost, spend on transportation cost.

Its not much of a choice when they create the options. Its a toss up between the devil and the deep blue sea, between the frying pan and the wok, or between a rock and a very hard place......

... and i still believe traffic could be better managed without ERP.

sadly Planology on city development is not in sync with the rest of everything.

[...When Ms Lee asked if he was encouraging residents to go home after 8pm, Mr Lui replied: "I'm offering a choice to residents.".....]

WTF is this reasoning.....if no evening ERP, then we have even MORE CHOICES! (instead of b4 8 pm or after 8 pm, can drive home at 6 or 7 or 8 or 9 or 10pm!!!)
