Indonesia: 1st time going Bali...

There are many local sights and sounds which are available on Wikitravel.

I've been there on Feb this year, and below is my advice. Note that i know Indonesian language, so getting around for me is much more easier. But as a tourist island, English will get long just fine in the more crowded areas.

Places to go/avoid:

If you got transport, try to go to the Volcano somewhere in the middle of the island, the view is breathtaking, and temperature cooler than the lowlands. Note that the trip is about 2hrs by car from Denpasar, not considering the traffic jam.

Shopping wise, there are a few really cheap outlet shopping selling mostly local goods (and usually frequented by the locals).

Avoid Kuta area as it's too commercialised and the beach is far from clean, with many vendors selling an array of goods.

Food:

Jimbaran seafood. Note that there are 2 stretch of seafood, the more touristy ones has more selection (and more expensive) while the quieter ones are more like fishing villages. But for the latter, knowing Bahasa Indonesia is a must.

If you eat pork, Ibu Oka Babi Guling is a must try. Go google for the location.

Masakan Padang are widely available too, and make sure you try their beef rendang.. very very good..

Warung Made is also quite famous eatery. Serve a variety of food at quite reasonable prices.

try waterbom, eat suckling pork, go jimbaran to eat seafood, and if u drive can go to Bedugul which has traditional pasar areas or kintamani mountain for cooler air. Go to Tanah Lot if you dont mind driving long range.

Long ago I went bali free and easy. There are hotel buses charging US$5 per pax to your hotel. There were also taxi that could bring you to your hotel at cheaper price - no more than price of 2 pax. So look around first.

Similarly, at Sdyney airport, I looked around and noted that the train to downtown (not to my hotel) cost much more than I took a bus just round the corner (2 way somemore) directly to my hotel. Just need to call the bus company about the time for return trip.

Ask the locals where they usually go for Babi Guling. Not where to find some commercialized restaurant bs, but where the locals usually have their lunch... A must try!

In another trip, another driver brought us to a temple. Have to rent the batik to cover our legs to enter the temple. So remember to wear pants or jeans so no need to rent. Dont ask me where, driver bring us there one.

If u wana ladies with rub-rub + special services [:p] , go to the area called Sanur. Thatz all from me. Did swim, paraglide n surf at Kuta. Near drowning at Kuta, cos the waves were really too much for me. Lucky saved by one of the lifeguards. Lots of tourist also the same. So be careful of the Kuta waves.

went there about 3 times n usually will insist on staying at Nusa Dua area...last was staying at Grand Hyatt....Nusa Dua beach is nicer but I understand rates are steeper...went to a seafood restaurant somewhere outside Grand hyatt...ordered quite a fair bit...work out to be approx. S$120 or so... but considering we hv lobsters, crab, fish n etc...it is quite ok....

Can give that dinner by the sea a miss...nothing much jus a place to chop chop tourist....Ubud (sound like Woboot) or something like that is a place for art stuff...but pls bargain like 60% off their quoted price...if u like something...Mt Kimtamani where the volcano is...mus depend on the weather...I went their thrice n 2 w disappointment...cloudy n cant see much...w kids, think better give it a miss bah...can be quite tedious for young ones...Tanah Lot is one of their attractions..

At kuta...u jus shop and eat...

Think this link provide u w alot of information to consider...

there are heaps to do in bali for a great family trip...

if you are more adventurous, you might consider mountain biking, river rafting and even canyoning! various levels of difficulties to choose from. a different way to create family bonding and a whole lot of fun and experiences thrown in at the same time.

Is that the place where there is a big lake, and in middle of lake is a temple? It is in the mountain area and air is cold. To go there must go thru many loops of curvy mountainous roads...
