LTA sets operating requirements for taxi companies

SINGAPORE: Singapore's Land Transport Authority (LTA) has set minimum standards for taxi availability.

From January 2013, 70 per cent of all taxis, per cab company, will have to reach a minimum daily mileage of 250 kilometres.

This translates to around eight to nine hours on the road per day, five days a week.

Cab companies will also need to ensure that 70 per cent of their entire fleet are on the roads during the morning and evening peak periods.

Based on these indicators, authorities will evaluate if taxi firms are allowed to grow their fleet.

If they need to be on the road 8-9 hours to achieve those kilometres, then how will driver fatigue be managed? A lot of studies linking more hours on the road without a break leading to more crashes.

Here are the details from the LTA site:

1. The Land Transport Authority (LTA) has completed its study and consultation on new Taxi Availability (TA) indicators and standards to improve the availability of taxis on the roads, to better serve commuters. Commuters can expect more taxis on the roads with the implementation of the TA standards from 1 January 2013.

2. The study on taxi availability was initiated with the National Taxi Association (NTA) and the taxi operators to ensure that taxis better fulfil their public transport role. Given also the concessions accorded to them1, it is important that taxis are better utilised and made more available on the roads to serve commuters, especially during peak periods. Additionally, there is persistent feedback about the inadequate availability of taxis.

3. The TA standards will be applied to individual taxi operators based on their respective fleet sizes. The standards take into consideration the taxi industry

Don't think the they measure the taxis using odo. Wireless GPS systems will solve the problem. Still can prove what time and how long the taxi was on the road.

Save manpower costs.

No need GPS also. Just need the reading from the taxi meter can liao. That one cannot tempered cos got LTA seal. The meter can capture the mileage with or without passengers. Cos not all company have GPS system. But all have taxi meter... :D

I have a lot of friends who are in semi-retirement mode and uses taxis mainly for personal transport. Only drive to cover rental or partial rental cost.

$110/day x 30 days = $3300/mth.

Consider new car monthly depreciation is about 1-2k, plus road tax and insurances..seems like it makes sense to get a taxi for personal transport. [:p]

LTA schoolar are just trying to make themselves look good and pass the buck to taxi companies.

How to enforce?

What penalties for failing to meet target?

Running on empty? LTA want to help pay for petrol?

But then again, 250km is easy to hit.

But not for very old single shift drivers

oic.....so now rather than hiding somewhere during peak hours to wait for phone bookings, the cabbies simply drive around wif their "on-shift" sign on......and wait for phone bookings. <_<
