Hybrid cars - any problems?

This post I made in May this year on another thread discussing hybrids.....but no comments at all....so...Resurrecting this thread to discuss hybrid and electric vehicles.

 

First off, any MCFers with experience of driving hybrids can share on

 

1. Reduced fuel costs. Ie. How much more you get per litre vs conventional?

 

2. What are maintenance costs like esp. Hybrid battery?

 

3. Lower ARF rebate/resale value/ higher road tax?

 

3. What recommended models such as Civic hybrid, Harrier hybrid, Estima hybrid, Rx450h etc to get?

 

I think in today's technology, no longer worth it to buy a Hybrid car, a normal Altis I believe some can hit over 18km/l. Friend recently bought a new B class and achieving over 17km/l as well. Most smaller size conti cars are giving really good FC, price are almost the same as Hybrid and best of all get back full parf rebate.

 

My Prius C currently giving me around 24km/l per month. Given the price of a Hybrid car and only achieving 24km/l I would rather pay a little more to get other cars thats available in the Market.

Agree with this bro....

 

Unless 100% city driving, i don't see how hybrid can save much given a premium is paid for buying one. The extra can offset the fuel from less efficient car

I drove RX450 before

 

FC improves and best if u r driving in traffic

 

Maintenance cost i serviced in borneo and they put my car same cat as LS.

My friend's Cayenne Hybrid got problem with the system but under warranty with Stuttgart so nvm let them settle. It's been in the shop for like the past 3-4 weeks liao but she's got a courtesy car from them.

 

Apparently a replacement battery costs around 28k, so she's happy to pay the 2.8k annually for the extended warranty which also covers the engine/drivetrain/etc.

Hybrid cars great for stop start traffic. Let the battery power move your car and save some fuel. Also, you have a silent cabin when your car is stopped.

If there is say 50% of highway driving, probably hybrid will not be worth paying for...

Most car these day are pretty efficient in highway driving.

Think toyota and lexus hybrid system more relible than porsche also cheaper to maintain.

 

Battery replacement for RX450 about 10-15k. But this is lexus. Toyota would be much more cheaper

Juz curious, for hybrid when stuck stationary in traffic jam, does the a/c still continue to be cold or does it kinda turn itself off to save elec?

For Toyota and Lexus, the engine will just shut down but the whole car run as per normal. Not sure about other make.

yes a/c does continue to be cold, toyota designs their car in a way then when the battery gets depleted to a low level the engine would come alive to recharge the battery to at least 30% or sufficiently to let it power the electrical systems of the car normally, the engine would then switch off to let the car enjoy a smoother ride. Same for other makes like the recent Honda Vezel and shuttle hybrid.

Hybrid cars have smart technology to allow the car to function as a normal car without any owner discomfort

however something to note is that servicing should be done at a specialised hybrid shop as high voltage components in the car are different from a petrol car.

Do some calculation and decide if hybrid do help you save in the long term.

 

I drove ard 2.5k a month.. And considering an altis vs prius.. I still would not have recovered to 20k i paid extra for an hybrid.

 

And let alone the higher cost of servicing gor hybrib.

Hi, not sure where you get the information on the higher maintenance costs. I drove the Prius for 3 years with 0 defects and servicing is free for the 1st 3 years except I pay for some extra costs using better motor oil. I didn't even have to change the normal battery after 3 years and the hybrid battery is under warranty for 10 years. My previous Picasso end up in workshop more than 5 times and changed 3 batteries within 3 years. The only downside on Prius is the materials used for the seats and dashboard is really cheap and come with 15 inch steel wheel.

Servicing for current generation Hybrids is the same as normal servicing. The Honda Vezel Hybrid is only a few thousand more than the normal Honda Vezel, yet so much more fuel efficient and so much more powerful.

I have not owned any but with today price, you need to be driving alot to appreciate the fuel saving.

 

Hybrid is definitely better than all elect. But the battery is definitely not going to last the 10 years I think. Even my car battery just for starting didn't last more than 3 years due to our kind of driving (short distance and always aircon).

 

aircon is the killer for the battery and of course our heat will shorten it further. Till they improve on battery, I don't think they are going to be popular any sooner.

With our govt half hearted support for greener environment, it will be better to consider hybrid for it's superb performance at a reasonable FC. Don't even bother to think of saving money as the main target.

Hard to save money when we are being penalized for going green.

then buy the Prius C lor, cheaper than Altis.. Servicing same cost as altis also haha..
