Nullifi3d 4th Gear February 3, 2013 Share February 3, 2013 Just speak simple and proper english. There's no need to add the American or UK accent just because you studied there or your circle of friends include a solitary Caucasian individual. Atonchia Supersonic February 3, 2013 Share February 3, 2013 Culture, value and behaviour has very little to so with language. The usage of language is only to communicate. Japan is first world, highly developed in terms of economic power, culture and refine behaviour. But I do understand they are also very developed in terms of pornography industry. Sometimes such acts are filmed in the view of public. Can I ask then are these civilized acts or behaviour?

My point actually is Singaporeans tend to associate English speaking with higher social status. When many behaviours are less than civilised, speak of what social status? And it's a common language spoken by lower tier people of many countries. (I don't mean ALL people of higher social status are civilised, just generality) And foreigners here are emulating, which is comical. Ur pt a bit strayed. Chucky2007 Turbocharged February 3, 2013 Share February 3, 2013 I don't know high class or not... But I am forcing myself to speak Mandarin all the time bec I realize my mandarin sucks when talking to PRC or Taiwanese customers, always mix some English words in it.. and I got A1 for my Chinese when in school. Its easy to speak English but its very difficult speaking in pure mandarin.

Happily1986 5th Gear February 3, 2013 Share February 3, 2013 I really don't see what is wrong with fresh off the boat migrants communicating with you using English. They make the effort using what is understood to be the de facto lingua franca here rather than expecting you to make sense of what they meant had they spoken in their native tongue(s). I think it is their way of being courteous to you and here you are, reciprocating the gesture of goodwill with cynical contempt. oh boy, you better not be one of those people who complain that the new migrants are not making the effort to integrate into our society because that will make you out to be a hypocrite, nothing less. Vextan 1st Gear February 3, 2013 Share February 3, 2013 the terms 1st world (developed), 2nd world (soviet bloc), 3rd world (underdeveloped) were coined to indicate what kind of economy a country has. so, there is no such thing as 3rd world behavior. seems people are equating economic power to behavior. it does not mean that a 3rd world economy automatically comes with bad behavior. i have met a lot of "first world" people here with very bad behavior. i've also met a lot with very good behavior. i have also met a lot of "third world" people in this region who are very kind, pleasant and courteous and also the other kind of behavior. money does not bring class and being a good person as a whole. i hope this "3rd world behavior" term stops.... You are right. But like it or not, nowadays society largely judge a person by the status and wealth.
Toyobaru Neutral Newbie February 3, 2013 Share February 3, 2013 Accent and language. Did some learning regarding this topic. People in power, their form of language gains dominance. How they speak it gains legitimacy. Southern American accent, charming yes? Other connotations? Slavery, the audacity to destroy the Union? Dubya jr bush? Boston -- ye ca pak ya ca hare. No 'r' s. You can't park your car here. How does Obama speak, no jive at all. Plain proper. Speak like a Roman. China -- why the dialects? Same language very different sounds for the same word. Hokkian -- FYI the language spoken at the capitol of the province is NOT Hokkian as we know it (history) . Ergo the boss speaks differently and everyone in the office jolly speak like him. Behavior is used to link with a form of pronunciation. Pay attention to the human politics when we choose to emulate to blend in. It was hilarious when we tried to buy barley beans to make yeemee jui. The angmo uncle when Bali Bali, we don' t have Bali, we have Barrrley. When singlish gains dominance, is when the speakers can move and shake the earth in terms of money and influence. Else, channel 5 newsreader pronunciation to obtain respect, ergo associated 'culture' It is relevant in terms of Japanese, Kansai pronunciation is associated with farmers, grimy hands, buck toothed and bowed legs, whereas Kanto pronunciation is Nihon Keisai, Armani suits and Chanel dresses. I like Kansai way, but I do speak Kanto. You find this everywhere, our bahasa versus KL? Our mandarin is primary level as opposed to ROC or PRC. Pay attention if we have the opportunity, speakers of non-dominant pronunciations tend to be put down or singled out as negative demonstrations. Put down as idiotic posts even. :-) How we write to natives determines our General Paper grade. The substance yes, still what impresses my Tamil friends when I pronounce a sentence exactly like them. No difference. Why he try so hard to get us sg to speak English while singlish entertains is bcoz he wants us to be taken seriously for us to sell our substance. FT speaking singlish is trying to get us to buy them. Can't seem to do the Oz accent though, my tongue can't drawl....
