Between Hyundai Elantra and Toyota Altis.....

Toyota, Honda and Nissan seems to be suffering from this "faiure to renew" syndrome. If you look at their design, and overall, only a few of their later models are ok.

While Korea brands like Kia and Hyundai seems to be trying hard to outdo themselves with each of their new models and new series of cars.

Another notable brand that seems to on the rise is Mazda.

Though the big 3 Jap brands are still the top choice for most people, but they need to reinvent themselves before they become their own country, failure to renew and rejuvenate themselves...

just my own 3cents worth...

Turbocharged

One thing about the Korean cars like Kia Cerato and Hyundai Avante, they only change the body design.

The engine is a carry over from the past few models. At least a decade old, old technology fuel guzzler engine.

Jap cars do not really reinvent. People here buy it for the reliability. This group willing pay more than the Korean group.

The trend is towards PHEV and in the meanwhile hybrids. Of which, the japanese are the world leaders of hybrids.

The koreans went towards diesel which improved their standing significantly in Europe for the last decade, but impaired their efforts in the rest of the world.

Toyota went all in with hybrids and hence, they are still leaders even now after almost 22 years after the Prius came out.

VW, BMW, Merces, the big 3 japs aren't really looking to achieve even better market share vs the Koreans. And the koreans don't give a crap about the others. Because the ultimate issue facing all of them now is

a) Autonomous driving by Tesla or google beating them to true fully autonomous driving. The one who does this first properly will be able to gain a significant advantage. And Tesla is already significantly ahead in the game.

b) Rise of Tesla and the pure EV. Though in 2019, many brands have begun to hit back with their full PHEVs which are now close to Tesla standards or even better.

c) The very real possibility of permanently decreased car sales starting from the coming decade and margins being squeezed due to that

d) The world's 2nd largest car market (china) being shut to them since the chinese are trying to create their own automotive giant in EV.

They are all facing a fight for survival in the next 15-20 years. They really can't be bothered to gain more market share from each other. Hence u see all the technology sharing, so that they keep R&D costs lower while racing to be in the front-line of autonomous driving/EV.

Only niche brands like subaru or mazda are really looking at gaining more market share. If Kia/hyundai don't have their eyes on the prize, they will also eventually be followers.
