(BEIJING) China's censors enjoy privileged access to materials denied to ordinary citizens -- but an elderly pornography examiner said he was revolted by his work.

 

Liu Xiaozhen, a 70-year-old censor who works for the Hunan provincial government, said he was embarrassed when he first took the job, according to a local television report.

 

"My face turned red to my ears and my heartbeat quickened a bit," he told Hunan Satellite Television.

 

Watching such footage can have enormous "psychological impact", the report said, so candidates must be married, preferably elderly, and undergo a training course.

 

Police in the central province seized more than 700 DVDs with sexual content in April and Liu and three colleagues had to finish viewing them within a week, it added.

 

The censors are tasked with classifying material as "pornographic", "obscene" or "others", apparently to define the charges offenders will face. In serious cases producing, copying, publishing, selling or spreading obscene material can be punished with life imprisonment.

 

Liu said there were ever more videos to view and he would not look at them if it was not his duty.

 

"Viewing them makes you sick and you wouldn't even want to take a look. But you have to watch them seriously because it is your job," he said.
