ER-3682 Twincharged May 26, 2013 Share May 26, 2013 I wonder Audi's 7-speed S tronic,is it 'almost' the same as VW 7-speed D.S.G.....? ↡ Advertisement
Shift_lock 1st Gear May 26, 2013 Share May 26, 2013 The VW 7 speed DSG is used on most VAG cars, which means most Skoda and Audi here also use the same transmission.
4rings Clutched May 26, 2013 Share May 26, 2013 Not sure how much you know about transmissions in general; but to give you a quick summary of the differences: VW DQ200: -7 speed forward, 1 reverse - Dual Single-plate Dry Clutches -Transverse engine mounting only (engine cylinders go from side to side across the bay) -Low fluid fill, lightweight for small applications (IE VW Polo) -Maximum Torque capacity of 180 Ft-Lbs Audi DL501 (equipped in the Q5): -7 speed forward, 1 reverse -Dual Multi-plate wet clutches -Longitudinal engine mounting only (engine cylinders go from front to back across the bay) -High fluid fill, dual separate oiling circuits (1 for controls, 1 for gears) -Maximum torque capacity of 440 Ft-Lbs. The "S Tronic" Audi transmission is much more robust than the VW 7 speed DSG. It does not suffer the heat and debris issues the regular DSGs can suffer, because the oil in the Audi 7 speed is not shared between the control systems and the gears; they each have their own separate oil paths, oil reservoir, and type of fluid. However, low end model like A1 and A3 share the same engine 1.4T with VW Golf.
Blueraven Clutched May 26, 2013 Share May 26, 2013 There is no way Audi is going to destroy its brand image by using the infamous dry 7 speed DSG. Audi is a premium brand so they can up the cost for better quality. VW on the other hand is the budget wing in the Volkswagen AG, their aim is to bring down cost as much as possible which explains why they choose to moved from the more expensive wet DSG to the cheap but problematic dry DSG. Audi's cars have either a wet dual clutch gear box or a conventional auto box. That is why you very seldom hear Audi having the same gearbox problems with VW

Sg571958 2nd Gear May 26, 2013 Share May 26, 2013 The new A3 uses the same 7 speed dry dual clutch - confirm from my Germany Colleague. He don;t even trust the A6 7 speed wet clutch! Paddie 3rd Gear May 26, 2013 Share May 26, 2013 There is no way Audi is going to destroy its brand image by using the infamous dry 7 speed DSG. The A1 and A3 (up to 1.8 T) DO use the DQ200 7-speed dry clutch gearbox. The A4, Q3 and Q5 etc use the 7-speed wet clutch gearbox, same as the Tiguan 2.0. Toeknee_33 Turbocharged May 28, 2013 Share May 28, 2013 (edited) Apparently there is another VW 7-speed DSG gearbox DQ500 that is meant for transverse installations, and can take up to 500Nm. Its a wet clutch system and is used on the larger VWs like the Tiguan. Audi's version is called DL501 and its meant for longitudinal applications. A1, A3 and Q3 are all clones of Polos and Golfs, which means they are identical under the skin. And Audi also uses CVT (A4 and A6) and single-clutch automated manuals (R8). Of course they also come in manual guises. Edited May 28, 2013 by Toeknee_33

Correct, this is the 7-speed wet clutch gearbox I refered to above. It's actually 600Nm, not 500. Info from here: http://www.volkswagenag.com/content/vwcorp..._new_dq500.html And how is the reliability of this gearbox with its twin oil chambers and multiple temp sensors? Or is it only the DQ200 that gives problems? ↡ Advertisement
