President's Scholar charged with false entries in SAF documents to have case re-tried

By Ian Poh

A 28-year-old army captain, who was charged with making false entries in an official document, will have his case re-tried after a military appeals court quashed his conviction.

Sherwayn Tan, 28, had been fined $2,000 for falsely indicating he had used a Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) facility to train soldiers under him, and another unrelated charge. He also received a letter of discharge from the Defence Ministry (Mindef) following his guilty plea in a Subordinate Military Court last July.

But on Monday, a five-man Military Court of Appeal unanimously decided that that the conviction be set aside following an appeal by the infantry officer, who is also a President's Scholar.

Tan holds an Economics degree from the London School of Economics. It is understood the SAF scholar, who enlisted for military service in 2004 and had a clean disciplinary record prior to the offences, is nearing the end of his six-year bond.

This year's other President's Scholar, Sherwayn Tan, 18, is headed for the London School of Economics to study economics. He was a student of River Valley High and Hwa Chong Junior College.

Both Sherwayn and Ruijie are Singapore Armed Forces overseas scholarship holders.

Sherwayn plans to do a master's degree in business administration in the US in future. But, for now, the cycling enthusiast 'is dying to cycle in France', for fun and perhaps competition.

He has an older sister, Shermin, 20, a medical student at the National University of Singapore. His father, Mr Tan Lye Soon, 51, is a retired air force officer.

His mother, Madam Mok Choi Chee, 50, a housewife, described him as an independent individual. She said: 'I don't know whether it's because he's left-handed, but he doesn't think and react in the same way and has a different perspective.'

Hypersonic

quite surprising that they would retrial the case. Thought usually SAF court is like formality only ... -_-

he pleaded guilty and so was convicted.

I assume then that he appealed the sentence, but the conviction got quashed?

falsified SAF documents? enough to ruin a president scholar's career?

really shocking.

i thought it happens all the time.

Probably offended somebody in there. Or got pow-toh'ed by a career rival.

No big loss lah, he still has a glittering career ahead of him in foreign bank. Any one would hire him, no problem. He can also go and study his MBA at some prestigious US school now (paid for by his new employer).
