Water-pipe leak 'likely cause' of ceiling collapse at Jem

Site inspections by Building and Construction Authority (BCA) engineers early Thursday morning have revealed that a leak in the water-pipe and the weight of water that escaped was a 'likely cause' of JEM mall's first floor ceiling collapse.

The portion of the false ceiling that collapsed was about 50m long and 4m wide.

In a statement, BCA said the water had collected on the ceiling, which then possibly collapsed from the pressure. However, the structural integrity of the building is not affected.

BCA added that it has ordered for affected areas of the building to be closed off and asked that a professional engineer check all the false ceilings in the mall and investigate the nature of the ceiling's collapse.
