Crowd of 100 refused to leave Rex Cinema after movie premiere was cancelled

By Tessa Wong

A crowd of more than 100 people, mostly foreign workers, refused to leave Rex Cinemas at Mackenzie Road, after the theatre cancelled the premiere of a movie on Thursday night.

The police were called in after some in the crowd apparently began shouting at cinema staff when screening of the Tamil movie, Veeram, was abruptly cancelled. They had lined up for more than six hours.

Two patrons, Mr Suresh Veerasamy, 29, and Mr Tamal Shanmugam, 28, both construction workers, said they got in line at 6am on Thursday for tickets. The cinema had sold tickets for a 9pm and a 12.15am screening.

Both workers took the day off work to catch the movie, and said they lost $70 in wages for the day. "I am very disappointed. I don't want a refund. I just want to watch it," said Mr Shanmugam.

Maybe because SPF showed too much restraint when they responded to Little India riot, they interpreted it as sign of weakness, now they don't get their way, they start being confrontational.

Eye witness account. Think this is nothing of the the previous indian riot sort. They just wanted an answer why their show was cancelled suddenly on the day itself without warning. This result many inconvenience, as they took leave the whole day to queue in the morning.

The same thing would happen if suddenly some korea pop or rock band suddenly cancelled their show last minute on the day itself when the fans are already at the venue, I'm sure they will stay around to get an explanation from the management.

But most of us would have reacted differently. We would complaint online or send feedback to media and shoot down the management hahaaa... Guess they really have no other ways to complaint huh?

Lucky no sale of alcohol else it would be uglier since they are alr filled with frustration?

must be a popular movie that they have to queue up in early morning and waited whole day just to watch it, losing one day income is a lot to them.

If the theatre can screen the 9pm show, why can't they continue with the midnight show?

What's the root cause?... Ok, form a task force committee to analyze why this happen, how it happen and what need to be done to ensure it will not occur in future...

After 3 mths later...

The finding is, machine spoilt after the 9pm show...

Recommendations by committee : past a large notice with detail of the reasons, provide free beer as compensation but cannot drink on the spot, only for take away and free flow of popcorn..

now don't over-react lah ... it's just a bunch of unhappy people thats all. Remember Hello Kitty, remember the smashed glass Door, remember the bleeding, remember the unruly SINGAPOREAN crowd? ....... shall we petition garment to ban Macs from selling pussies?

Human Beings will react same same in a given environment - black, white or yellow.

They will get bolder and bolder, just wait and see...

These bangla workers are like men in the army, they try one two time if no backlash, they will climb all over you. Dat is why u must grab them by the balls at the first sign of dissent.
