dont think its that simple. If Japan and some of the asia countries are more expensive than us, apparently the real cost is still very subsidized.

lets just hope there are no quantum increase everywhere like food and electric bill as well just to response to public transport cost.

dont say like that la..  we also got subsidize mah....    we subsidize their pay....  [lipsrsealed]

https://sg.news.yahoo.com/unsustainable-for-transport-costs-to-rise-faster-than-fares-khaw-063321065.html

Fares have not kept up with rising costs and it is “not sustainable” for taxpayers to subsidise transport operating costs, said Transport Minister Khaw Boon Wan in Parliament on Wednesday (8 March).

Speaking during the Committee of Supply debate, Khaw said that over the next five years, the government expects to spend nearly $4 billion in the transition of the New Rail Financing Framework, and another $4 billion to subsidise public bus services.

“All these – four plus four equals eight billion (dollars) is on top of about $20 billion we will be spending to build new public transport infrastructure,” said Khaw.

“Over the years, as fares have not kept up with rising costs, taxpayers have to subsidise more and more of the operating costs especially as we have been raising service standards significantly. This is not sustainable,” said Khaw.

Khaw continued, “While the government will continue to subsidise public transport heavily, we must find a fair balance in the relative burden to be borne by commuters, taxpayers and the operators. And remember also that commuters are also taxpayers.”

The Public Transport Council (PTC) will be reviewing the fare formula this year after the current fare formula expires. Khaw added that he was “confident” the PTC will “decide wisely”.

“But remember, the PTC cannot always bring good news, sometimes they have to adjust fares upwards. And when they do, I hope commuters will be understanding,” said Khaw

There is great difficulty for those policy makers to differentiate what are essential and what are luxury.

Water, basic food like rice, transportation and electricity are considered essentials which even if tax payers subsidized is considered by many to be OK because it can help ALL the needy without worrying some falling through the cracks.

Unfortunately, when policy makers justice that increase GST actually help the poor, we already finished.

We do alot of stuff look good on paper but reality no long term benefit. Eg Formula One and Airshow - a week or so hotel rooms, car rentals and eateries may be fully occupied. After that tourist disappear. But just how many hundreds of million of dollars we pump into these events. Some chairman analyzed this.

For those who are upset please dont. I was like you but now I am harden. Some people just need to learn the hard way otherwise never learn. Let them suffer and their following generation suffer to climb back to their past social status.

Sometimes I feel as citizen we need a bit of respect. Where in the world which country, tell me, teach you to be aware of how precious water is, increase one shot price by 30% then tell us kopi price should not increase. Are we living in Mars?

As for transport, every year i recieve good dividend from the train company, have they calculated and include the revenue from rental and advertisement spaces in our train station before stating they are losing money.

I am confused, in the past year several surveys showed people are very satisfied with train service and also significant improvement with low breakdowns. Then we have breakdown a few days later.

Truly what is wrong in collecting more money?

I thought they just congratulated themselves and reduced the fares down albeit slightly? Now suddenly costs increased again? [:p]

Caught by surprise again?

To be honest, the reason to have what ptc or whatever name you call it, is to direct and soften the impact of the eventual decision. Make it less direct and not everything Gov say one.

This is similar to companies implementing a policy change. Management is unlikely to make changes but would engage a consultant to review the process and make the recommendation before they endorse it to soften the impact.

iirc, during last reduction, PTC did not recommend the full reduction as per the formula to leave some "buffer" for the transport companies or something.

this "buffer" is now conveniently forgotten by all parties ?

Not too bad lah, used for 30 years.

Wear and tear also 30 years. A train run for 30 years surely is time for replacement?

Nationalise is for these purposes too to make it more efficient for travel, if private company will try to prolong use as long as possible since no need to pay COE.

IDK how our train system can be so bad when its newer than many of the rest..

Japan's HK's and Korea's are all older than us.. and none are giving as many problems as ours..

Wear and tear aside, Japan changes trains every 20+ years too

You must see who chair the PTC!

Sound like GL ladies promoting aid awareness. Tell you the danger of aid and still want you to visit them.

Simple..straight.

See how difficult to obtain PR status in Japan and Korea. These two countries plus HK...has very strict restriction in immigration polices.

Our ? Open leg wide..wide..as long as you want to come. We hug you with open arms.

Probably we bought a watered down version to brag about lower costs compared to other countries riding on the fact that they already pre-determined that in a small island, we don't need higher speed train and also the fact that 6.9M was not in the equation at that time. IIRC, ours max speed is 70 km/hr, but of course we know optimal speed is lesser than that. The signalling system was a joke also 'cos no matter how they upgrade, they can't upgrade to such an extent that train interval can be 1 min apart.

On the other hand, HKG also small island, but trains very fast and goot.

Also, there is something I noticed...

SG system is the only one where you can "owe" money. You need to make sure you have enough before you board.

The rest, you can owe up to a certain upper limit..

True.

But in Tokyo, the number of people travelling through it daily(especially Shinjuku) is more than our population in sg.. YET the only issues trains face there are "human incidents"..  On the rare occasions trains are delayed, they are usually fixed quickly

http://www.channelnewsasia.com/news/singapore/public-transport-council-kicks-off-2017-fare-review-exercise-9169990?cid=fbcna

It will announce its decision on the fare adjustment quantum in the last quarter of 2017, the council says.

image: data:image/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAINGAPORE: Train operators may submit their fare applications to the Public Transport Council by Sep 29 for this year's fare review exercise, PTC announced on Wednesday (Aug 30).

For this year's fare exercise, PTC said it will be guided by the existing fare adjustment formula, which takes into account the consumer price index, energy costs and wages, and is valid until the end of 2017.

Based on the fare adjustment formula, the maximum allowable fare adjustment quantum is -3.9 per cent. With the carry-over quantum of -1.5 per cent from the 2016 fare review exercise, the fare adjustment quantum to be considered for this year’s exercise is -5.4 per cent, PTC said.

The council said it will strike a balance between "keeping our public transport fares affordable and ensuring the long-term viability of the public transport system".

The decision on the fare adjustment quantum will be announced in the last quarter of 2017, it added.
