all over the news liao, please be prepared

http://www.todayonline.com/singapore/spore-faces-threat-early-prolonged-haze

If it came out from the official mouthpiece then no need to worry.

Nature always like to go against them. Last year PM says be prepared for prolong haze lasting till Oct/Nov then the haze retreated.

When they say flood only once in 50 years it became a yearly affair.

you know those hundred odd indonesians we un-invite from the airshow?

Those officers who had been all eager and excited to come here for an all expense paid RnR and look at planes?

well, those fellas coordinate the waterbomb runs and cloud seeding ops, and they are not too happy....

Had they started burning forest in Indonesia. Its only begining of February 2014 ..... [confused]

yahoo news: Return of haze feared as Indonesian forest fires reach ‘alarming conditions’

Hazy days may return to Malaysia after it was reported today that hundreds of hectares of forest in Indonesia's Riau province have been ravaged by fire, reaching "alarming conditions", according to the Jakarta Post.

The English-language daily reported that a lack of rainfall made fire-fighting efforts more difficult, and thin haze has already blanketed Dumai and Pekanbaru, Riau's capital.

“Firefighters experienced difficulties extinguishing the flames as the area is dried peatland,” Riau's Meranti Islands regency forestry agency head M. Murod was quoted as saying.

Fires have been burning since last week in the regency, and have spread to Rangsang Island and Tebingtinggi Island, destroying about 200 hectares of land.

Murod hoped Jakarta would help the efforts by arranging for cloud seeding to avoid a repeat of the haze which struck neighbouring countries.

In June last year, schools in Singapore and Malaysia were shut and state of emergency declared in several areas in Johor after the Air Pollution Index (API) crossed 700.

An API rate between 0 to 50 is considered as good, 51-100 as moderate, 101-200 as unhealthy, 201-300 very unhealthy, and above 300 as hazardous.

In the past, the dry season, between May and September, was blamed for the haze, as well as on Indonesian farmers who did land clearing for the planting season.

The haze last year had also sparked a war of words between Jakarta and officials from Malaysia and Singapore, after an Indonesian minister said Sinaporean and Malaysian companies were to blame for forest-clearing activities.

Murod said he could not identify the plantations involved in the latest fires.

The blaze is getting bigger and bigger inside the plantations. It’s difficult to identify. I have just received a report on losses suffered by residents,” he said, as reported by the Jakarta Post.

Bengkalis regency's Disaster and Firefighter Agency head Mohammad Jalal meanwhile did not rule out land clearing activities for the latest fires.

“We have often warned about avoiding fire in peatland. In the current hot weather and strong winds, the dried peatland could easily burn and it’s difficult to extinguish,” he told the Jakarta Post. – February 3, 2014.

from yahoo: Hazy skies in Singapore to worsen; welfare of neighbours not Indonesia's priority: Balakrishnan

Environment and Water Resources Minister Vivian Balakrishnan has warned that the haze may worsen next week.

In a strongly-worded
Facebook post on Tuesday night, the minister said that hotspots were increasing “dramatically” in Sumatra again.

“Haze may worsen when the winds weaken next week. Some rain expected, but not enough to douse the fires,” added Balakrishnan.

He also expressed frustration with Indonesia over the haze situation.

“We will try to encourage them to take action - but we all know the welfare of close neighbours is not their priority. Hard truths of regional politics,” he said.

According to an advisory on the National Environment Agency’s (NEA) website, a total of 458 hotspots were detected in Sumatra on Tuesday – a sharp increase from the 187 hotspots detected the day before.

Of the 458 hotspots, 246 were in Riau province, where some smoke plumes were observed to be emanating from the hotspots.

But NEA said Singapore is unlikely to experience haze for the rest of the week.

“The prevailing winds are expected to remain northeasterly for these two weeks. Therefore, for the rest of this week, the likelihood of transboundary haze affecting Singapore remains low, although Singapore may experience occasional slight haze due to accumulation of particulate matter under stable atmospheric conditions,” said NEA.

As at 12pm on Wednesday, Singapore’s 24-hour Pollutant Standards Index (PSI) reading was between 25 and 33, while the three-hour PSI reading was 28 — both within the “good” air quality range.
