Our public transport system is really still very good.

yes ... hopeless

add more trains ... open more lines ... add more capacity at platform for standing ... for what?

train go-stop-go and sometime need to wait on track for the train in front to leave platform

The current signalling system no matter how they upgrade, the shortest time between trains is 100 second i think. This is how the system default was built and nothing much that they can do about it. As such, commuters have to suffer daily while taking the train, as the train system here is hopeless.

Agreed, the more train they added the problem and discomfort of the ride is, cause the initial train system that they built is not meant for such capacity. Just cover the current problem with another potential problem.

and trains are traveling at slower speed at most of the lines

nabei ... a 2015 train is crawling compare to a speeding train in 2005 (10 years ago)

But but in the event of a blackout like the recent one where got power to power free wifi?

You mean everything in an mrt station taps the same power source as the trains???

Not a very good thing to create more standing space, cause this will meant they can schedule longer waiting train timing. If train interval is fast enough to clear off people from platform, the current platform space should be enough.

this is to anticipate and facilitate the potential crowd due to longer waiting time... one of alternative steps besides making effort to ensure no train breakdown... :) a comprehensive approach... after all most of these stations are considered the first batch compared to the newer ones.

The current train system cannot allow train to come fast, nothing much that they can do liao. So the only thing that they can do is to create more space to pack even more people at the platform.

Example like the current two platform at Jurong East station for train going towards woodlands, have notice the waiting and stopping time for train is much longer. Since there are two platform for the train to stop, resulted the train needs to move off alternate timing which contribute longer stopping time, and more jam packed in each train.

I fully agree with you... the design criteria, be it train railway system or its stations was of different capacity.... much lesser passenger....

Finally find someone who got the same view as me. The real problem is overcrowding due to import of "FT" without building up the basic infrastructure first.

Actually the problem here is not about whether the infrastructure is enough or not, but it is about the design and capacity that our infrastructure can handle. I think the infrastructure that they built back then maybe is only for the maximum of 5 mill population, anything exceeded would put a stress on the system, and could create problems and issues.

I think the govt should look into adding more tracks to our MRT system, same as Japan. Then commuters can choose express line or normal line, where express line stops at few stations and able to skip the stations it is not stopping.

Also look into the possibility of double deck expressway for CTE and PIE with lesser exits/entrances. So ppl going further no need to be stuck in traffic.

Even govt want to add more tracks or express line also too late liao, cause all these planning and construction needs lots of time to be build. At the rate of our rapid increase of population here, dont know how much longer will the commoners need to suffer daily?!

For the over ground tracks, it is possible to add.

EW line : From Jurong East skip all stations and reach Redhill. Then from Kallang, skip all stations to Expo.

NS Line : From Jurong East skip all stations to Kranji, Yishun and Bishan.

Ultimately still we are the ones who will be suffering, due to some poor planning and forecasting from the authority back then.

Yes, you r right. Back then, in the 80s/90s, our gov never plan the population growth would be of several millions in a span of 20-30 years to cope with the global/regional market change. So in early 2000, to stay competitive, our gov reluctantly had to approve to have 2 casinos in one go instead of years contemplating of having even one. Overall, the speed of preparing and building a comprehensive and complete infrastructure was much slower than the actual population growth.... This is what is happening now. Traffic jam, train breakdown, human jam, etc. I personally dislike having to walk slower to adjust to the slower walking pace of the person in front of me in public area... :(

Ultimately still we are the ones who will be suffering, due to some poor planning and forecasting from the authority back then.

The choice is not ours, unfortunately. They are mitigating the intermittent imminent problems here and there.....recovery measure... I should say.... :(

I am also of the view that the initial design was probably not designed for our current day load and usage.

However, there are far older metro systems in other major cities which have managed to keep pace with their modern day commuting demands. They have upgraded their systems to meet the modern day load requirements.

So I can only presume ours has a missing link somewhere in the planning and enhancement stages and we are still doing catch up on maintenance as the system has obviously been overloaded too much in the last 10 years.

Maybe those older metro system in other cities, they might designed the system in such a way that they are able to expand or upgrade their system to meet the demands along the way. Whereas our system maybe designed in a stringent manner, which difficult or cannot be changed and upgrade.

I still remember SMRT has said before that no way they can change the current signalling train system to 1 min, cause the system is not build in such way.

Funny isn't it? Over 5 decades ago, technology to send a man to the moon and back existed and today, it is impossible to change the signaling of the train system.

OK two different problems and budgets but just saying.,,,

Neutral Newbie

I wonder what is the purpose of taking mrt and joining the mrt crowd? Will it change anything to the hopeless mrt here?

.
