China military training inadequate for winning a war: army paper

China's military authority has sent a document to military units detailing 40 weaknesses in current training methods, the People's Liberation Army (PLA) Daily said in a front-page story.

(Reuters) - Weaknesses in China's military training pose a threat to the country's ability to fight and win a war, China's official military newspaper said on Sunday.

China's military authority has sent a document to military units detailing 40 weaknesses in current training methods, the People's Liberation Army (PLA) Daily said in a front-page story.

"These problems reflect shortcomings and weak-points in the makeup of our military fighting force. If they are not promptly dealt with, then they will certainly affect and hinder our army's ability to go to war," the paper said, citing the PLA general staff headquarters.

President Xi Jinping has been pushing to strengthen the fighting ability of China's 2.3 million-strong armed forces, the world's largest, and stepping up efforts to modernize forces that are projecting power across disputed waters in the East and South China Seas.

The country's armed forces came under fire earlier this year from serving and retired Chinese officers and state media who questioned whether the force was too corrupt to win a war.

The military newspaper said China needed to find a cure for the "peace disease" affecting its training regime to ensure the armed forces could master the ability to win a real conflict.

Military authorities identified issues for the country's army, navy and air force, including training standards and styles by commanders and military units. The problems were identified through supervision of drills, including joint exercises with foreign armed forces, the PLA Daily said.

Another country military that is inadequate must be Thailand. Their army has never gone to any combat or war.

They are only deployed to suppress their own people and to stage military coup.

Can't really predict based on just one factor. Winning a war depends on so many things - troop morale, training, equipment, planning, luck and etc

Turbocharged

Can't really predict based on just one factor. Winning a war depends on so many things - troop morale, training, equipment, planning, luck and etc

My guess is they are ironing out the weakness in doctrine level.

I feel it's a good thing for them to be transparent about it. But it's also a psychological news to let potential enemies know that China is also improving themselves.

Being a superpower the stakes are very high when it comes to winning a war...

Most countries haves some tough nuts or cracked units in their military. But in terms of the whole armies readiness it's another story. A country need an army to win wars, a small group of tough nuts can only do so much.

Sort like a GTR with 10 litres tank left vs A Honda Jazz with full tank, which will go further?

Nope, never been there and don't know about their rangers.

I am talking about their army as a whole. They will spare no effort to impose martial law, stage a coup or suppress the political protestors.

Basically their army is used against their own people only and not for conflicts outside of the country.

If you do a google search on Thai Army, all you see is coup, martial law, crackdown on protestors, etc.

We have long mocked Malaysia's armed forces but when it was necessary to deploy in the Lahad Datu standoff, they displayed decisiveness and resolve and demonstrated a degree of combined arms operations ability.

We should never underestimate anyone - when sovereignty is on the line, men are capable remarkable things.

Pretty self beating?

Reverse psychology?

Some reports rate China's navy catching up with Japan fast.

"China is out-building Japan virtually across the board," Yoshihara said.

http://www.scmp.com/news/china/article/1560065/chinas-navy-no-longer-so-inferior-japans-experts-say

China's loss of the first Sino-Japanese war has been attributed to a disorganised navy. Although the northern fleet equalled, some say exceeded, the Meiji navy in terms of firepower, it was annihilated because it lacked coordination among its military units.

Today while Japan's navy may have a qualitative advantage over China's, the People's Liberation Army is catching up, analysts say.

In sheer manpower, China has the upper hand, with Beijing putting the PLA Navy's strength at 235,000, or more than five times the number in the Japan Maritime Self-Defence Force.

But the Japanese navy has being training with modern warfare strategies, and with different units, for decades, according to Macau-based military expert Antony Wong Dong

.

"PLA units are still exploring new ways to operate jointly, which could lead to merging their different weapon systems together," Wong said.

Toshi Yoshihara, an associate professor at the US Naval War College, said that although the Japanese navy was still superior in technological sophistication and experience, China was catching up quickly.

"China is out-building Japan virtually across the board," Yoshihara said.

He said the PLA Navy was deploying modern destroyers, frigates, fast-attack craft and submarines. "Japan is already having trouble keeping pace with this level of Chinese output."

As so many Chinese warships had entered production, adding mass and balance on the fleet, Japan could no longer rely on its qualitative advantage, Yoshihara said.

But a deciding factor would be the support of the US Navy. "The US-Japanese alliance is essential to weighing the overall naval balance," he said.

China might even have the edge now, according to Dr Lyle Goldstein, an associate professor at the China Maritime Studies Institute under the US Naval War College.

"In my opinion, the forces are quite evenly matched now, but China may even have pulled ahead in recent years," Goldstein said. He added that this was not the official assessment of the US Navy.

Why must go further when the goal might be just a short 1/4 mile sprint? If can fight based on own advantages, why let the opponent fight on their own advantages? Don't need to drag out something that can be accomplished in a short time mah.. If got the GTR with 1L of fuel, and the Jazz with full tank, and the Jazz want to race, just suggest short race lor.. Fight long race = give advantage to the other guy..

Then again, we should be more concerned with our side than just being concerned with others sides. If China want to fight us, we're goners pretty quickly..
