Most pples will say that SG is safe from earthquakes but ......... [grin]

yahoo news: Earthquake: Is Singapore in danger?

A second 7.4 magnitude quake hit Nepal on Tuesday, just three weeks after a deadly earthquake struck Kathmandu in Nepal and killed over 8,000 people.
Early Wednesday morning, a 6.8 magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of northeastern Japan.
The string of deadly quakes came as a surprise to many, but scientists say that the phenomenon of earthquakes was actually a result of a disaster that started about 50 million years ago.

A lot of quakes are reported in the Ring of Fire, however, Singapore residents need not worry too much.

According to the National Environment Agency, Singapore is in a fairly safe zone where earthquakes are concerned, as it is located about 400 km from the nearest known earthquake source.
The closest experience to an earthquake in Singapore come from the weak tremors felt by some as a result of shock waves that travel from distant earthquakes, mainly those that strike Sumatra.
Nevertheless, a report citing a study conducted by researchers at Nanyang Technological University in the 1990s states that there is still risk of an earthquake, albeit a small one, based on incidents of ground motions in Singapore between 1833 and 1995.
To break it down, there are four types of earthquakes – tectonic, volcanic, collapse and explosion. The most common form of earthquake is the tectonic earthquake, which happens when rocks against the earth’s crust breaks due to forces created by movement of the tectonic plates. Volcanic earthquakes, as the name explains, occur in conjunction with volcanic activity. Collapse earthquakes are small quakes that happen underground, while explosion earthquakes are a result of the explosion of nuclear and chemical devices.
The quake Nepal experienced was a manifestation of the ongoing convergence between the Indo-Australian and Asian tectonic plates that built the Himalayas. Earthquakes manifested by the same tectonic plates in the past include the Bihar 8.2 magnitude quake in 1934 that killed 10,000 people and the 7.5 magnitude quake in Kashmir in 2005 that killed around 80,000 people.
While seismologists have come up with many ways of predicting earthquakes, none have been accurate. The probability and rough estimate of the location of an earthquake can be calculated but only mother nature can be sure of the exact time and location.

Hypersonic

Brought my kids to Science Centre during the last Dec school holidays. They have these earth quake rocking platform for us to experience different level of earthquake.

Have a very uneasy feeling that we should feel the tremors soon as the Himalaya quake plate link with Pacific plate.

Japan had theirs 2 days ago and the only one left is Indonesia .... [sweatdrop]

If we have major earthquake here, it's either being swallowed wholely or kena pushed up like a sore thumb in the air.

Twincharged

It had been 8 years since we last felt the tremors from Indonesia quakes .... [sweatdrop]

Toa Payoh area always can feel the tremors. [:(]

Not only Toa Payoh, any high rise building sure will feel the tremors.

Look out for signs lor. If you see a whole herd of animals & birds running flying in one direction. You know you have to run too.

Hypersonic

The last time I felt the tremors in Singapore, I thought I was giddy and going to faint.

So yes, it is possible for Singapore to have earthquakes if the magnitude is super big.

According to the experts, we are generally safe coz protected by surrounding islands

Then again, natural disaster are natural, so hard to be 100% huh

So I choose to

Live my day every day the way I want, the way I like and don't worry too much about tomorrow

No regrets when the time comes...

I always see huge crowd of peoples queueing in Sg.pool in one direction but no earthquake, so I never runs [laugh]

Nnnnnnope........ :relief:

Possibly the big one with effect will be another couple of million years.

Yah....Run when see them

Well, some experts had said that the 'big' one (quake) is long overdue leow.... [sweatdrop]

Indonesia 'ring of fires' and California quakes are long overdue. Predictions is that either one will hit within this century....

Indonesia one is about evry 80,000 years and their last one (Aceh quakes) are not consider as the 'big' one.

6.9-magnitude quake strikes off Solomon Islands

Published: 21 May 2015 8:07 AM

A 6.9-magnitude earthquake struck off the Solomon Islands in the Pacific on today, the US Geological Survey said, but no tsunami warning was issued and no major damage was expected.

The quake hit at a depth of 19 kilometres, some 184 kilometres from Lata and 487 kilometres from the capital Honiara. It was followed a smaller 4.9-magnitude aftershock.

"Based on all available data there is no tsunami threat from this earthquake," the Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre said.

The Solomons are part of the "Ring of Fire", a zone of tectonic activity around the Pacific that is subject to frequent earthquakes and volcanic eruptions.

"This is one of the most active seismic regions in the world – in the last three years we have had 30 plus earthquakes of over 6.0 magnitude," Geoscience Australia duty seismologist Marco Maldoni said.

"No damage is expected from this quake. The main damage from these sorts of underwater events doesn't usually come from the earthquake itself, but the tsunami – most seismic energy is released into the water."

Earlier this month, neighbouring Papua New Guinea was rattled by a 7.1 quake but a tsunami threat passed and there were no reports of major damage.

In 2013, the Solomons were hit by a tsunami after an 8.0-magnitude quake, leaving at least 10 people dead and thousands homeless after buildings were destroyed. – AFP, May 21, 2015.

There is far greater chance of a terrorist attack than getting a > 4.5 Richter scale earthquake in Singapore.

Most people won't feel anything with a < 2.0 Richter.
