Programs, AI, or even weapons are always "neutral", until the people that decided to use them turn them into their advantages, and these advantages are conflicting with each other. AI, at its current state, is still very helpful and harmless. But given more adoption of AI within individual lives, things will start to change. Nobody knows exactly how do you control an AI, especially if the AI has the complexity past human brain. We can imprison someone as punishment, but how do you do that to an AI?

I do hope the future government can take a more pro-active role in the world stage. We might be small, but finding our abilities and strengthening them will put us in a better position. We can only hope the upcoming 4G leaders can sprinkle some magic powder (other than on votes)  [:p]

Thanks for the links!

Odd that during high speed, the electric motor is turn off. I vaguely recall Honda and Toyota hybrids turn on both the gasoline and electric motors for maximum performance during high speed.

I feel before we can tackle the world, we will first straighten ourselves. Perhaps, our founding fathers do not had that much of an issue due to the situation then, focus the team has and strong character leadership. Current times would be very different challenges, then the past.

It is just like an organisation train its employees, it is also a form of staff retention. Employees will also feel more valued by the organisation.

The training credit scheme could be done away completely. As long as the training or education for adults are subsidised, those interested will attend. Even if the direction is to encourage more adults to attend, incentives could be provided through income tax.

Why should we be worried about academic inflation?

Isn't it better if more citizens are well-educated and able to analyse?

Even if citizens who are well educated, unable to find jobs in Singapore. They could be working overseas too! But will they forget their home, Singapore? The place where they grew up and was educated? I guess... Most likely no.

For Singaporeans who eventually are overseas; isn't it truly globalisation from another perspective? It is just like a seed, grew to a tree, mature will flowers, bearing fruits with seeds and the seeds from the tree will get to somewhere and regrow into a tree when the situation allows.

Unless, the intention is only for us to train those who will guarantee to only benefit us later on. The direction would be different.

Sometimes, we can be quite penny smart....

Taiwan is a good case study for academic inflation. I guess Singapore probably looked at Taiwan and decided that it is best Singapore not be to in their situation. In fact, it is almost an irreversible change once you crank up the supply of undergrads in the country unless u forcefully close down universities. I agree... it's cruel as there will be innocent kids with high potential being left out due to the rigid system but... every policy has pros and cons. Mayb I'm not speaking from the point of view of the less privileged but just that there's a real risk to the other side of the scenario too. Forgive me if I offended anyone.

I agree that the government should put more effort in developing the locals. Somehow the training credit scheme doesn't seems effective, when people are using them for private hire car courses. I think emphasising on the SMEs can be a good start, since SMEs should be the growth engine for a country. Just how many sg brands grow well over the last decade, as compared to the 90s?

I think education level isn't much of an issue here. But it's more of a mindset thing? Think we are one of the countries in the world where citizens are least interested in politics.  [:p]

There's this short interview I watched some time back, where they interview this popular hair stylist David Gan. He said "If I'm not loud, I'm just a a normal hairstylist." I think that's especially true for us as a small country. Think we have to move on from LKY era, and create our own path where we can survive.

Think we can discuss these over coffee next time? So as not to stray away from the purpose of this thread. [laugh]

Not sure if anyone here has already tried this speaker upgrade for their FNA but seems to get good reviews so I have bought the following..

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00PV6F8I2/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s01?ie=UTF8&psc=1

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00M21LKVI/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o06_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Hoping to install this weekend and supposed to be a direct plug and play fitting with no mounting modifications or wiring needed. I am not an audiophile but will report back on any sound improvements once I am done... :-)

Hi Yuguangr,

I guessed if side steps to be installed, will depends if it is able to hold the weight of a person? If it is just for cosmetic purpose, might hinder entry and exit of the vehicle.

Electrical tailgate might be useful for ladies who are "not that tall" or "strong enough" to pull the tailgate down to close. Else, for the rest; it is a convenience. (For your information; my spouse like the electric tailgate.)

I had no idea of any whatsapp group or fb group. You might like to check with seniors here. They could assist you.

Thank you.

Best regards,

K. C.

Hi Kuramanbo,

My view of Taiwan's situation would not be so much of academic inflation only. There will be a few things to cosider:

1. They do not use English language as their first language. Where it will be very important in international trade.

2. They lack crucial formal international relationship. Hence, international investments into Taiwan are lesser.

3. Skillset mis-match of the needs in the industry and acadamy provisions.

Infact, Taiwanese government had been quite supportive towards development of their SME in the early days. Hence, we do see huge Taiwanese companies expanding into regions.

It will also depends alot on; how we term academic inflation.

Of course, we should not be lowering the standard of education system. Just to make sure everyone gets a degree.

The standards can be there. But people should be able to go through the course and earn it. Those who can't manage for the first time, could go through two or more. As long as they are willing.

It will not harm a society to have more learned people. In fact, after going through the rigors of academic training; will make a person better in many different aspects. At least, the individual will be equipped with knowledge, analytical skillset, discipline, focus... so on so forth...

However, if the intention is; to obtain academic qualification and earning big bucks. I feel that it would be a wrong mentality to start with.

Moreover, with more learned citizens; most likely we would be better at problem solving as a country.

At times, we might not need the government to create job opportunities. If individual have sufficient knowledge; we would be able to create value.

Of course, entrepreneurship is totally another different topic...

haha... I feel; many things in Sg will boils down to figure. Perhaps, we are so effective till individuals are so concerned about the cost-benefit and value.

I personally feel; if we are able to be in LKY era all the way... It might not be that bad afterall...

It might felt regimental, but it certainly felt more peaceful back then...

Sure. Over coffee.
