Wow ... so much discussion over whether Volvo is luxury brand or not.

Anyway, I think Volvo kinda priced themselves out with profit margins of 2~3x OMVs.

Buyers are not dumb, for this level of premium quantum, most would go for one of  the 1A2B Germans.

Rationally, it just does not make economic sense to go for Volvo as it is still perceived to be below 1A2B.

Thus, we don't see that many Volvos around.

However, car buying is sometimes an emotional thing...

can explain whats 1A2B?

is volvo overpriced? i not expert with these numbers. i did a quick search.

Figures from Sgcarmart:

volvo S90 omv 39k, selling at 202k

merc e200 omv 55k, selling at 257k

seems fair or not?

In Singapore context, volvo is ranked lower than big 3 German

To me, Volvo is a luxury brand, just not as luxurious as BMW and Merc. It is just like luxury bags, there are different levels, e.g. LV and Hermes.

I always wondering who define which car brand is luxury and what is their ranking?

just like how people prefer a certain brand but cant afford so end up buying the cheapest entry level car of that brand with a lack of features that even a b&b car has.

an example is buying audi a1 just because you want the 4 circles branding but the interior is absolutely pathetic or getting A3 vs getting Octavia 1.4. getting an entry level conti for the brand is probably the worse decision when you can get a "luxury" jap/kimchi at the same price or even lesser.

some people just dont realise that driving an entry level conti doesn't naturally upgrade your social status or give you an upgraded aura but deep down, people are just laughing and wondering what on earth are you thinking to spend so much...for an entry level conti.

bro, ppl who buy an entry level conti car is not necessarily looking to 'up their social status', if there's such a thing.

there are so many reason to buy a car; like the looks, like the brand; like how a small car handles; maybe single, don't need big car

i agree A1 is a tiny car, maybe it doesn't suit u, but suits someone who like a small, funky looking car and easy to park car.

i surely won't be laughing at them

I always wondering who define which car brand is luxury and what is their ranking?

same here

if u like, means rank very high in your own ranking lor haha

Under vehicle type in Sgcarmart, E class, S90, Superb, Insignia are labeled as Luxury Sedan..

wow how did u get the profit margin?

actually i heard a few ppl mention volvo omv is low.

But i always have the impression for the same category of cars (xc60 vs glc or v40 vs a class) , volvo usually is cheaper. So i think it balance off

but for sure volvo is never as popular as merc or bmw here

its all stated in the lta website

Very simple layman way : selling price - total basic price.

Of course some will say that this doesn't take into account AD's overhead but this is not transparent to me so I will ignore it.

Luxury is subjective.

Considering maximum financial situation allow someone to buy car:

People Not able to buy car >> Any car is luxury for them

People driving Perodua >> Honda/Toyota is Luxury for them

People Driving Honda/Toyota >> Merc/BMW/Audi is Luxury for them

People Driving Merc/BMW/Audi >> Porsche/Maserati is Luxury for them

And so on to Rolls-Royce, Lamborghini , Ferrari  etc

i am not sure what is "True Luxury" definition haha. Maybe its "True Luxury" for us but ultra rich people consider that as basic or way below their standard.

i think true luxury will be rolls royce/bentley where you buy and get driven.

Some of it could be useless information.

Not true, the price and cost information can be used as reference, but most people buy car do not really take into consideration about dealer margins, their considerations are brand, what they like to buy, features and the one price that they are paying for.
