3 in critical condition after Pulau Bukom fire

POSTED: 21 Aug 2015 22:32

SINGAPORE: Three people are in critical condition after a fire broke out at Shell's Pulau Bukom Manufacturing Site on Friday (Aug 21).

The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) was alerted to the fire at 6.15pm on Friday evening. The blaze was extinguished by the Company Emergency Response Team before SCDF arrived on the scene.

Six contractor workers suffered burn injuries and were sent to the Singapore General Hospital (SGH). "Contrary to speculation, there is no SCDF personnel among the casualties," the civil defence force said on Facebook.

Of the six workers injured, three have been admitted to the Intensive Care Unit, SGH confirmed. One is in stable condition, while the two have been discharged after receiving outpatient treatment.

"We are following the progress and treatment of the other workers closely and are working with our contractors to ensure all possible support and assistance are rendered to the injured workers and their families. All other personnel are accounted for at the site," a Shell spokesperson said.

Shell added that the fire was put out by the sites first emergency responders within an hour and said there is no other impact on the sites operations. The firm added that it is working with the Singapore Civil Defence Force to investigate the incident.

Work in these conditions is no joke

HIgher chance of accident then letting a tree fall on you, or falling into a deep pit in SAF training area.

Hope the men recover.

Recently got a lot of burning, bombing etc. Hope these people can have a smooth recovery.

Turbocharged

Work in these conditions is no joke

i agree.

all 3 refineries in singapore have had major incidents with people killed. None are spared.

There's another risk. In a past career i did some contracting work for oil and gas companies, and in that period 6 colleagues were diagnosed with cancer during the course of work, and from that only 1 surviving to date. 2 of those who passed on were under 35 yrs age.

Some gas are carcinogen. That is why must attend their SIC and ask their safety the risk while working in their plant. Most of the time it is the personnel in the plant having 'slack' mentality as they are so use to the environment that everything is normal or little-bit-nevermind attitude. Best is equipped yourself with the knowledge and challenge them when required.

In the past, the safety culture are not so strong, I even heard some of the staffs uses benzene (a carcinogen) to wash off sticky tarry stuff off their hands.

Hopefully as we progress, all will be better educated on the risks of their work

The problem is that much of these carcinogen impacts are not felt after many years.

The other complication is that individuals display different levels of resistance against them, due to genes or whatever unknown reasons.

During NS we were told to use it to wash our hands. [bigcry]

SINGAPORE: A fire broke out on Tuesday (Mar 20) on Pulau Busing, one of the islands off the southern coast of Singapore which is home to oil and chemical storage facilities.

The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) said in a tweet at about 6.30pm that it is responding to the incident.

The fire involved an oil storage tank, said SCDF in an update at about 7.15pm, adding that members of the Company Emergency Response Team (CERT) are conducting firefighting operations.

No casualties have been reported.

The oil storage tank that is on fire belongs to Tankstore, which has a facility on Pulau Busing for storing petroleum and petrochemical products.

A 29-year-old Channel NewsAsia reader, who did not want to be named, said she saw smoke rising from the island since 6pm.

Ms Nicky Ng, 48, told Channel NewsAsia she saw the smoke from the condominium she lives in near Harbourfront.

“It was about to rain and (we) heard thunder … when (we) looked at the sky, saw smoke in the sky and then saw it coming from the offshore island,” she said.
