Engine Oil 101

 

Do you know what's the 'C3' on our MPM Premium Synthetic 5W40 'C3' Stands for? And more importantly, do you know what kind of oil is needed to go into your car??

 

The 'C3' actually comes from the classifications of engine oils laid down by European Automobile Manufacturers' Association (ACEA). Besides C3, this particular oil also meets the more common A3/B4.

 

Generally, the classifications are categorize into:

 

A/B refers to Gasoline/Diesel engine oils

C refers to Catalyst Compatibility oils

E refers to Heavy Duty Diesel engine oils

 

There are other classifications such as A5/B5, A1/B1, C1, C2, C4... and etc. Please look out for our future post where we will elaborate more on other specifications.

 

ACEA 'C3' oils are mid-SAPS (Sulphated Ash, Phosphorus and Sulphur) lubricants. They are designed for use in gasoline or light duty diesel engines where after-treatment systems such as Diesel Particulate Filters (DPFs) and Three Way Catalysts (TWC) are used.

 

In layman terms, with less SAPS content in engine oils, it will reduce clogging of your after-treatment exhaust systems and thus these oils will help to increase the lifespan of the DPF and TWC after-treatment systems.

 

Besides ACEA classifications, MPM Premium Synthetic 5W40 C3 engine oil also meets the requirements laid down by BMW Longlife-04 and Mercedes Benz Longlife 229.51 and is suitable for Euro 4 engines according to the ACEA C3 standard.

 

This engine oil meets the following specifications:

 

• ACEA A3/B4 / C3
• API SN/CF
• BMW LL-04
• Ford WSS-M2C-917A
• MB-Approval 229.31 / 229.51
• Porsche A40
• Renault RN 0700 / RN 0710
• VW 502.00 / 505.00 / 505.01

 

So what does the above mean to a normal driver?

Engine Oil 101

 

This chapter we will share more in detail about MPM Premium Synthetic 5W30 'ESP' Engine oil and why you should use this oil for some cars that you are driving.

 

'ESP' stands for Emission System Protection. As the name suggests, this oil is has been specially developed for the latest generation of VAG, BMW and Mercedes Benz engines with or without a particulate filter for diesel engines (DPF) and catalytic converter for petrol engines

 

This engine oil is designed for excellent performance, protection and improve fuel economy. Its able to perform at extreme high and low temperatures and protect against engine wear and sludge.

 

This oil also conforms to the 'C3' specifications which we have discussed in our previous post and obtained various OEM approvals such as

 

- ACEA C3

- BMW LL-04

- MB-Approval 229.51

- Porsche C30

- VW 504.00 / 507.00

 

Outdated engine oil technology is not designed to limit the amount of oil-derived Suphated Ash, Phosphorous & Sulphur (SAPS) in the exhaust, which could clog the DPF and prevent it from capturing particulate material effectively.

 

Therefore if you are driving a car with advanced exhaust treatment system, this engine oil or oils with the Catalyst Compatibility specifications is a necessity for your car.

 

*Note this oil is not suitable for the 1st generation VW TDI engines with pump injector nozzles without an extended oil-change interval and R5 and V10 TDI engines.

Every car that comes to us for servicing goes through our Real 26 Vehicle Checks system where we thoroughly inspect almost every component of your car, making sure it is road worthy and safe.

 

This Subaru Legacy came in for servicing with a slightly bent drive shaft, and a blown boot. We spotted this fault, and advised the owner to have it replaced. He permitted, and so we did.

 

Here're a few pictures of the old and new drive shaft removed and installed respectively.
