Old Sylphy car horn doesn't work

My old Lafesta having the same problem. Bypass it is the best solution. No point to spend $380

A little surprised that car horns can break down. I mean, my Sylphy is coming to 9 years old only.

 

I was told by the workshop that it is a common problem to Nissan cars. It's not the horn but the contact on the steering wheel that's worn.

 

Appreciate fellow motorists in this forum can advise where to find distributors who supply the "pad" (to be mounted on steering wheel) for the horn. Perhaps, what is a reasonable price to replace the horn?

Run one wire from batt positive (fuse box) to a relay (get it from Sim Lim Tower).

Connect the other end to horm (cut the original supply wire) 

 

If you are not sure the wire location, you might want to get it done by workshop. JB could be a cheaper choice. It is a simple job.

I confirm China version (taobao) is the same, cost me less than $100. Just that signal auto spring back might not work as well.

To make sure that it's a clockspring problem, I turned my steering wheel all the way to the side and pressed the horn. It worked. But when the steering wheel is back in it's original position, it doesn't work.

 

I asked a few workshops and they said the original Nissan clockspring is $200+, no way am I willing to pay so much for a worn wire or switch part!

 

So I sourced my own cheap clockspring online from AliExpress and went to a recommended workshop to change.

 

Total cost is around $70, including parts and labour cost.

 

(Do note as the above poster mentioned, as it is not an original product, the signal at times would not automatically spring back after you make a turn. But having saved at least $200, I can live with that.)

sadly, sg workshop really mark up alot on the parts and labor. some wprkshop charge parts one price and labor charges separately.

 

sg labor cost is getting higher and higher. car is there and labor job charges on different jobs are being charge separately.

My Nissan Grand Livina uses the same clock spring as Sylphy. When the horn stopped working, I bought and installed a cheap compatible clock spring from China. It lasted about a year. The clock spring wires for the driver airbag failed. Fortunately, I kept the original clock spring and decided to repair it. I used a wire wrap tool to connect the horn pins to the adjacent working unused pins. Success, my horn works.

Check out the pin out below. What you need to do is have the pin swap to another working pin. You got ur horn back. Most pin not use unless you have both audio control and cruise control install which most don't have. So you don't need to change the whole clock spring.
